Diseased Mind: Why do you not allow any customization of controls beyond the preset 'templates' that you come up with?
A: One basic reason is that we have to test each combination. As you’ve seen with button glitches in Halo 2, it’s not simple – especially with a competitive game. We need an even playing field. That said, there are more controller options in the final game than found in the Beta version.
But... "We need an even playing field"? With the ability to map any action (within reason) to any button; that in my mind keeps things absolutely "even" - everyone has the same options and would be able to do what felt natural to them.
I remember one of the cool thing I loved about playing UT was that I could customize my keyboard layout. I wanted to do whatever I could to improve my game. Besides playing more, I decided to take a close look at my control configuration. I discovered that I like to duck while sniping - it slowed down my movement, steadied my aim and made me a smaller target - so I moved my crouch key to one that allowed me to hold it with my middle finger while I could strafe with my index and ring finger. Changes like these made the game much funner IMO because it allowed me to personalize it to my liking but only to the same degree that everyone else was allowed.
Right now, I naturally want to hit the right bumper to melee. I am in the process of untraining myself to do that ( I had an xbox1 controller made that had 'bumpers' installed and mapped to melee and jump) but it would be cool to have the option to use the vastly superior 360 control do the same thing.
Thanks,
