I've been reading about many users having the same problem, and still nobody seems to have found a resolution.

Went through the following options to try to fix this.

Opened port 3074
Installed the LIVE update
Installed the "no nudity" update
Turned UAC both on and off
Turned off Firewall
Opened port 3074 on my router
Tinkered with ncpa.cpl options for fix
Tried with both a gold account, and with a new silver account
Run as administrator
In Control Panel-Internet Options turned security settings to medium (lowest available), as well as adding xbox.com live.com and microsoft.com to list of trusted sites
Uninstalled and reinstalled the game 3 times (last two times doing the Install First, NOT tray and play)
Carried PC from home and tested it from my work connection
Prayed to God, Moses, Buddha, Mohammed, and Tom Cruises' God

AND STILL I CAN'T CONNECT!!!

Best of all, I called the phone number from the "Games for Windows LIVE" webpage, and was told that if I don't have an XBox they can't help me.

Anyone figure this one out yet? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Putting up a tracking thread at my forum for this if anyone wants to add anything: http://www.thatforumplace.com/forum/ - hopefully we can find out what these people with this error have in common and get it fixed already.

I'm having the same problem.
If you look at the support page it brings you to when you open the link from in-game
it tells you that the code means "LIVE service is not available. Please try again later"

I think it on their end.

I can definitely confirm its NOT on their end because I have been playing multiplayer for a few days now. In fact, it worked right after I installed the game. Maybe LIVE somehow doesn't support your router? What brand are you using? I'd be surprised if it was incompatible though because I'm using some generic piece of crap from a company that went bankrupt and it works fine.

Im using Linksys WRT54G
You'd think they would make sure it was supported seeing as its the most common router out there.

I have tried manually installing all the updates and even installed the redistribution package of the LIVE for Windows service.
This is driving me nuts, I can't even play offline because I haven't gotten past the damn login!

Well if you want to play offline you can create a "local" account that only works for LAN and campaign. They mention it in the manual, I haven't tried it myself...

There is no problem with that router as I play fine with it.

I recommend custom firmware for the WRT54 series of Linksys routers. Specifically, I recommend DD-WRT*. It can turn your $60 router into a $600 router. The QoS features are worth the upgrade alone.

*NOTE: I am not responsible if you screw up your router. But, if you can read, and know how to follow directions, you should be just fine.

Unfortunately, that quality seems to be sorely lacking in some of the people around here...

Why not contact microsoft instead of asking people who have no idea what they're talking about.

Update - since this whole thing was posted, I made a ton of progress. PSPH4XOR - I actually have the identical router to you, and the solution has to do specifically with teh router.

Anyway, I outlined all the steps for other people to try, as well as the LIKELIEST solution. It's a fair bit to repost, so instead, here's the link: http://www.thatforumplace.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=117&t =5906 (the specific router answer is on page 2 or 3) I probably won't be checking this forum again, so feel free to post additional questions at the forum I just noted.

I have cable, and I'm plugged directly to the modem. No hub or router. I STILL can't connect to live. I troubleshooted it like crazy, even called up the "LIVE" support which told me the same thing.

Me: "I'm having connection issues with Halo 2 Vista for PC"
TS: "We only handle X-Box or X-Box 360 issues"
Me: "Then why does the site give this number?"
TS: "No it doesn't"
Me: "How do you think I got the number?"
TS: "Sir I can't help you."

Frustration is truly building in, and I just don't know what to do. It's horrible that no correct answer seems to be given, and i don't think they're going to magically fix it when the game truly comes out since there is still a number of people playing live without any issues. It makes me truly regret buying the game at all. Anyone else dealt with the same issue with cable and has someone gotten through this? Your words of wisdom would be appreciated.

I'm directly connected to the modem, therefor there is no router page. I'm always on, so there is no admin name or password. The information you posted relates more to people with DSL then cable. I went through all the troubleshooting on MS's KB site. Did the registry thing, did the updates, turned off the firewall completely, turned off Avast! Anti-virus completely, reinstalled the game about 3 times, still nothing. Before I did the update, it was able to recognize there was an update for it, so there's obviously some form of connection going on. It just wouldn't do the update. So I did it manually. Now it gives me the same error after hanging there for a minute. There has been no website that has offered solid help on this, nor does Microsoft even seem to recognize my problem.

Hmm..i'm getting this message now to. But, I'm at work. I was playing all weekend at home with no issues.

I'll have to try it again when i get home. If its still like this, and my 360 works, then its obviously them. Maybe they shut down windows live either in prep for shadowrun, or because they aren't ready for people to actuallyt be playing H2 online. You know, considering that its not even really released yet?

I got that error behind the firewall at work.

When I connected from home... Road Runner, worked AOK.

To test, you could install to a different PC and try it from the connection you are having issues with, and see if its your ISP or your PC.

Hey Scott,

Are you referring to the KB article posted here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937379 ? If so, which registry changes did you make? Also, are you connected to your cable modem via USB or an ethernet cable. And, how many NICs do you have in your PC?

Thanks,

I simply backed up the registry due to the fact that there wasn't any registry options to change, so I really didn't do anything in that aspect. I am connected to the modem via usb, but I have tried it through ethernet with the same result. I have 1 built-in ethernet port on my motherboard, no other NICs besides that.

Ok, well, worked fine from home last night and this morning. so the problem obviously lies somewhere in the firewall setttings.

Where and what, no clue. But i did have that same error trying to sign in from work.

I hav not read through this entire forum so I don't know if anyone else has thought of this plan but I have successfully got Halo 2 working through an ADSL modem.

I used;
1x Custom built PC loaded with Windows Vista Ultimate
1x Patriot Laptop loded with Windows XP Home Edition
1x ADSL / DSL 8Mb/s Internet Connection
1x CAT5e Patch Cable.

It became obvious to me through reading these forums that the problem only occured through ADSL / DSL modems. This made me think "What is I change the outgoing internet connection type?" through my traditional experimentation with my computers I decided to change the connection to a Home Network (as this seemed the most appropriate choice). I networked the two computers as follows:

8Mb/s DSL line ----> Patriot Laptop Connected to internet and networked to PC ----> ...CAT5e Patch Cable connected to... ----> Vista PC with Halo 2
(Basically making this a wired router)

This makes the outgoing connection from Halo 2 think it is connected at 100Mb/s directly to a wired router.
Vista will automatically detect this network and you can easily follow the step by step guides to setting up a network in XP if you have to (message me if you need help)

This post will only help those who happen to have 2 PCs. You can, if you really wanted to, just buy a cheap computer off eBay or out of the newspapers.
For those of you who do not hav 2 PCs, keep bugging Microsoft, Bungie and Gearbox (if they were involved in this project)
