I see the two games as one. When H3 arrives then the three will be one. We'll then have what Marty calls "an epic trilogy."
I disagree. I think it is far better for parts of a trilogy to stand alone. Whenever there is too much run-on, something gets lost. Example - matrix. The first film stood alone and was all the better for it. The second two merged together (were even made at the same time) into one big convoluted, self-referential, self-satisfying mess. There was no restraint, no prioritisation, no containment - it's just story threads running free. How those story threads are contained and controlled is what makes a good story.
I really wasn't happy when I saw a so called 'cliffhanger' at the end of halo 2. It leaves no room for any new creativity or adjustment to the story, as the beginning of the next installment is already ordained. It completely lacks any kind of foreclosure or resolution. In storytelling, a resolution is as important as anything else. It reminds me of the Matrix Syndrome - the cliffhanger is a lazy summer-blockbuster cash-in maneuvre, not an intelligent story device like I would hope to see from bungie. I'm impressed very little by all those monotonously pointing towards an ill-justified 'deep' story in halo 2. Again, see Matrix - the second film had a far deeper story. It was still bollocks compared to the first one. Ultimately this is a video game, and a visual and visceral media - dramatic pacing, urgency and immersion kick the everlasting -blam!- out of exploratory backstory and perspective expansion.
Please bungie, don't make Halo 3 a Matrix Revolutions.
