I haven't experienced ANY bugs whatsoever. And I don't see how there's horrible optimization. The game runs as smooth as butter on my rig.
Bugs/glitches: (to name a few)
-You can't go into crouch mode while walking, this can be annoying.
-Sometimes I can see certain lighting effects through walls (like the plasma pistol charging up or the lights on the elite's armor).
-Chat is really messed up... if you are typing and you hit the same key that you used to activate the chat, it leaves chat mode.
-I've had the game crash on me a few times for no apparent reason.
-Many people have been having trouble loading campaign maps.
-Many have also had trouble with tray and play.
-All bugs/glitches from Halo 2 Xbox are still there: button comboing, superbouncing, etc.
-Etc.
Most of those are just minor problems, but when there's enough of them... it's very annoying.
As for poor optimization... I'm guesing you received your computer from God himself, or it's just amazing. My PC can run CS: Source, Doom 3, etc. with all video settings maxed out, on the highest resolution and I get a very decent framerate. Now on Halo 2 Vista, I'm running on medium details, 800x600 resolution and 4x anti-aliasing, and I get 30 frames or less plus random lag spikes. Also, turning off anti-aliasing doesn't help, and turning the details on low only increases my frames to maybe 40 a second. There's something very wrong there. And I'm not the only one that's been having framerate problems with this game either.
I will admit that my computer is pretty high end.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB DDR2 RAM
Geforce 8800GTS
But some of those bugs I don't see at all, such as the lighting effects through walls, loading campaign maps, crashing. The only real problems I experienced were when I first installed it, I did the tray and play option, and I got a few blue screens after that. Decided to uninstall it, reinstalled with the "install now, play later" option, worked fine after that. Sometimes if I start the game from the DVD then I'll complete one level then it'll tell me I have to "insert original Halo 2 disk" and kick me back to the main menu, so I started the game from the .exe and it works fine.
I can understand where you're coming from though. It seems to me like it's a RAM hog. Just today I upgraded from 1GB to 2GB of RAM, and when I had 1GB (which was on the recommended specs) it would lag horribly at the beginning of cutscenes, but after that it'd be fine. I think Microsoft didn't really have the mid-range PC in mind when porting this game. As much as I like this game, some of Microsoft's... methods don't exactly appeal to me. For example, I'd be angry too if I didn't already have LIVE which would severely limit MP gaming.
