I get this strange problem when I go to install Halo 2. I get a pop-up window saying there are 2 errors with the installation. The first error says I need to update my video drivers, but according to windows, they are up to date. The 2nd message, and the heart of my problem, says:

"Your processor is running to slow to run this game. Your current processor speed is: 1000ghz. You need at least a processor speed of 1500ghz to run this game. Your computer's processor can run up to 2200ghz. Please change your power settings, so the processor can run faster."

I have never seen this before. Further more, Halo 1 and several other current games run smooth as butter on this machine. I just want to be sure that my processor is running at the correct clock speed, and perhaps there is a setting under the motherboard diagnostics that will allow me to change this. I am not talking about "overclocking." Also, Vista rates my processor speed at a "4.9" and my new computer has an overall ranking of 4.1. The 4.1 is from my video card.

Anyone have any advice on this?

Here are the specs of my machine....

Processor: AMD Athalon 64 x2, Dual Core 4400+ 2.20ghz
RAM: 3.25gb
Video: NVIDIA Geforce 7300 GT (Pci-e) slot
Hard Drives: 500 gb, 300 gb, 300 gb (all sata)
OS: Vista Ultimate

Run this to see what speed your machine is running. It will give you full details.
http://www.cpuid.com/

Also right click your vista desktop, hit personalize --> screen saver --> power options at the bottom of the page and make sure its not throttling your system with a balanced or power saver plan.

This is one thing that I did. I have the power management set to give the best speed on my system and I still got the message. I'm going to try that link you suggest.

be aware for power options to take effect, you must reboot after the change.

Let us know what speed cpuid reports.

Ok, I used that CPU-Z diagnostic tool. Here is a screen grab. It shows my CPU running at it's proper speed. I still don't know why Halo 2 seems to think my processor is running to slow.

IIRC certain processors slow down when not being extensively used. I remember someone at the Steam forums having this problem

Yup that would be my guess, go into your Bios and disable it.

It slows your CPU down when it's not being used thus making the fan more quiet, but when your in a game or running a program it speeds up to normal speeds in your case 2.2GHz.

Hey thanks guys!! I found "Cool N' Quiet" in my BIOS and disabled it. That got rid of that "processor speed message." But Halo 2 still runs awkwardly, and the controls are awful. I may put this back on my shelf till my next upgrade.

I working on Sin: Episodes, C&C3, and the Battlefield 2 Collection at the moment. I also may go through and play Half Life 2 again on my new computer. I'd play Half Life 2: Episode 1, but it runs worse than Halo 2 on my computer. Not really sure why.

And screw the reviews, Sin: Episodes is a damn fun FPS.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

I loved Sin Episodes, great game.
