Sweet, I can't stand the FPS lag. Do you just close out of it, or is there a certain way to do it?

  • 05.29.2007 5:46 PM PDT

What it is.

I never have the sidebar running, so this doesn't help my FPS issues.

Another way to help fps is to set your theme to windows classic. Maybe adjust your windows performance options, try a clean boot, whatver.

that doesnt help because classic takes up as many resources as areo, just areo uses more GPU resources. but H2V turns off areo

Then take my other idea, the clean boot.

going anything "extreme" has always been a waste of money to performance gained. See the 8800 Ultra $250+ for a few more frames.

Thats the core 2 extreme, not duo the core 2 duo extreme is the conroe x6800 which is dual core and clocked at 2.93 Ghz and also ~$1k. Besides, come july that same chip will be renamed the core 2 quad q6700 dropping the letter x and the price $500 and the core 2 quad q600 will drop to ~$260.

Recapping

Pre july 22nd
c2d e - conroe - dual core - $1k - 2.93 GHz
c2e - kentsfield - quad core - $1k - 2.66 GHz
c2q q6600 - kentsfield - quad core ~$500 - 2.4 GHz

here is a quick tip for those of you who is running it in window mode, with all of the games I've played in window mode, Halo Trail, Halo PC, Halo CE, and Half Life 2, I've found that you get better FPS if you don't have a ton of windows open in the back ground, close them or minimize them, it really helps with the FPS, and like the Lolwalmart said, don't have the side bar running, and try not to have your task bar on auto hide. those are ways I keep my FPS up as high as I want them to be.
Oh, and any thing flashing, or moving in the back ground with kill your FPS as well.

Why don't you use the X3000 integrated chipset? From what I've heard around here, it's a pretty hot piece of hardware.

Kim, are you alright lol?

As for the waves of lag, open up task manager (Alt+Ctrl+Del -> Task Manager), Click processes, and end any memory or CPU hogs... Also watch the CPU usage and Physical Memory on the status bar of the Task Manager. The CPU Usage should be under 5-10% and the Memory should be under 40-50%.

You dont want your ram to be unused, you want it to be used for your game as hdd swapping is painfully slow. As it stands vista handles memory a lot better as it caches programs that you might use but if you choose something else it release the unused program/code from memory.

For the record, the game runs very smoothly (read: no slowdown at all) at minimum requirements if you GPU is fast enough. If your graphics card isn't fast enough you're going to have issues, even if people who have technically worse cards than you run it fine.

I am using ZoneAlarmSecuritySuite and it has a GameMode built right in so you can turn it on and no other program can interupt, update or comunicate anywhere. It is just you and the game. Suuuuiiiiitttttte!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disabling the side bar can help out with lag issues and low frame rates. He's a few more tips to try out when playing Halo 2 Vista:

1. Disable windows Defender. By hitting ctrl+Alt+del; then Open task manger and find MsasCUI.exe, next right click it and hit end process. (You can also try disabling it completely under the windows security settings)

2. Run game with Hp administrator settings. Right click Halo 2 vista shortcut, then properties. Now click the compatibility tab. In the new window select run this program as an administrator.

3. You can also try disabling visual themes and disable desktop composition. (These settings disable windows Vista's advance visual settings while playing the game) They can be found in the compatibility tab in Halo 2 vista shortcut properties.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!! I just spent a lot of money just to find it's going to die, in July. I guess I will just have to go out in the front yard and bury it and go get the X6800.

The x6800 is a waste of money. If you got that much to spend get a quad core.
