I do agree perhaps that the M6D pistol + powerups + rocket launcher dominated gameplay a little bit too much, but I think the responses made in Halo 2/3 have gone about it all wrong. Here is what I would have done, had I been the one to revise Halo:CE...
1. Instead of nerfing the pistol/replacing it with a less-skilled based weapon (BR - three shot spread COMPLETELY changes how you use it), the other weapons could be made more powerful.
a. Shotgun - improve the range by tightening the spread a little bit (ONLY a little bit, extend the range by a few meters)
b. AR - same as above, improve the range by tightening the spread a little bit
c. PR - great weapon already, maybe could make the plasma shots move a little bit faster
d. PP - same as with the PR
e. Needler - honestly...it could have been removed. But if you must keep it then make the needles travel much faster through the air.
2. Some players didn't like timing the powerups/power weapons (this did not include me). I think this added an important strategic element to the game, but I would do a couple of things to make it more palatable to the casual gamer:
a. Make the timer in-game, so everyone can see it easily.
b. Have two of each (two powerups, two rocket launchers, two snipers) on every map that has one right now, this way domination through control is more difficult and games will not end up as one-sided.
3. Equipment is nice, and I think it adds a small new element to gameplay. I would include it and I would also include the ability to use/pickup gun enplacements (pulling out to a third person camera).
Other than these things, I wouldn't change a thing except for the graphics.
