Just as a thought, Sargent Banks is the Halo 2 2003 E3 demo says when you arrive " I didnt think they'd send a SPARTAN". This could be because according to the books ONI section 2 (public relations) went public with the SPARTAN 2 project in 2549, so it is likely that almost everbody knows about them. But it sets in stone there are more SPARTANS out there.

Actually, it was never stated why Dr. Halsley took Kelly. My retarded opinion is that she took Kelly to develop the Mark 6 armor, since only Spartans can use the [thor's hammer name] she needed a test subject. None of the Spartans would have stayed to test it since they would have preferred to fight, so she forcefully took Kelly....

Perhaps she took Kelly because at the time, Kelly was the only one fastest to handle the Mark VI

why would she need to be fast?

Because when the original one was developed ( MarkIV?), Dr. Halsey showed the Marine leutenant moving too fast and he didnt have a fast enough response time to control it (Kelly). Perhaps slightly post First Strike, the Mark VI was just finishing and needed testing, so Halsey chose the fastest

I think she chose Kelly because the position (and i mean from just being checked out, and trusting), it was easy to knock her out. And in the E3-04 demo, he didn't say they already had it. He just mentioned what armor you had there, not that the game starts off with it. There could very well be another book before the game ships explaining it... or the start of the game shows how you get the new armor. So until the next book, Halo : fight for survival, or the game comes, we wont know for sure though.... and in case your wondering, yes, I made that book name up....

Speed technically wasn't part of the reason that regular people couldn't use the MarkV. It was also the strength of the people. The spartans themselves had to adjust to the armor's fast reaction (since it was also "thought controlled" if i remember correctly.. neural implants.. gotta love it...).

Good point. I believe in an EGM article a long time ago (insert Star Wars pun) it said the you do not start with the Mark VI (hence R&D with Kelly). There could be plenty of time between the end of First Strike and Halo 2 (as you said there maybe another book between now and then) because it ended September 13th 2552. Halo 2 (and research compleion time for mjolnir) could be between Late 2552 to mid 2559 (the operational end of Cortana's life span)

Alright, Everyone take a DEEEEEP breath.

Let's go back a few steps into the book. Dr Halsey leaves with Four SMG's, am I correct?
I haven't read all the books, but I am a writer.
I can tell you from experience, nothing is thrown into a story Randomly.. ( Unless the Writer is a Buffooon ) If they mention Four Sub machine guns and Redemption, Think along those lines.. What would a Doctor do with Four Sub machine guns?--Use that as a Line for all of your theories on that little issue, But back at hand... As for more than one Spartan, I'd believe so. I just finished " The Fall of Reach " After seeing what they were capable of, and beating the game several hundred times on Legendary, knowing what a Spartan ( in-game) is capable of against those odds... 1 to 100000... Think of them this way... 30-1000000...
With 30 spartans, I promise at least 5 survived... LoL. Anyways Ladies and Gents.. just thought I'd throw in my input..

So a hardened fighter won't survive augmentation but 14 year olds can? What the hell are you thinking in? Certainly not a box...And the Augmentaions have a 60% success rating, so there is a chance he could survive DER!!!

It is not very likely; When Mendez started training the Spartans in 2517 he was already An experienced soldier in his mid thirtie. Now we jump forward 35 years & he is close to 70. Not very good material for the Spartan program is he.

Spartan-3's have been in training for 25 years so it is likely they are available for HALO-2

Okay, just go back to around page 8 that's where i and others listed some huge posts and the answer you seek is somewhere in there (i think.). And the answer to your cant someone just....give me....a pic...or....description....if not....bash me to death with my own skull.
question is no (i'd rather melee you with your own flag) . The question who are the Spartan 1's is still an open debate (sort of unless you accept the general conclusion), so it's still up to you to figure it out and come up with your own ideas.

Also read The fall of Reach if you're really interested.

The reason why I just mentioned that it could still be open to debate is that -i don't think- it's ever spelled out in the books that the reasoning behind naming the Chief's class "Spartan 2"s was that the original Spartans were in ancient greece (and they kicked ass!). Now that i think about it there could very well have been a class of Spartan 1's (did they fail to pass the augmentation procedures? was this do to a lack of science that was partially solved by Dr. Halsey and so she then got the task of making Spartan 2's????) All Dr. Halsey says in the beginning of FoR is "As per Naval Code 45812,you are hereby conscripted into the UNSC special project code named -SPARTAN II."

I'm considering this. it would sorta make sense cause we have Space shuttles today named after old sailing ships and there names aren't "The Endeavour II". Ususally when a something classic is used for the first time in a modern way -the name is adopted as is. But maybe this changes in the future and they respect the ancient context of the Spartans and therefore name their first class (1st special project) Spartan II's.
