I've found a little context error between Halo: First Strike and Halo 2, that I thought I should discuss.

As any Halo 2 beater knows, at the end of Halo 2, in High Charity, the Master Chief must leave Cortana behind in the Covenant network so she can help him get to Earth in time to fight.

HOWEVER, in First Strike, while preparing to board the Unyielding Hierophant, Cortana manages to make a copy of herself using a subroutine she found in the Ascendant Justice's Covenant AI. Cortana copies herself, so she may remain on the Ascendant Justice-Gettysburg, while the copy stays with the Master Chief on the Unyielding Hierophant.

So, if Cortana could use that copying subroutine from the Covenant AI to duplicate herself (twice, actually) in First Strike, why couldn't she simply do the same thing on High Charity at some point, so that she may stay with the Chief, and leave the copy behind?

Remember, a copy is never as good as the original, FS mentions something about the copy not being as capable. And maybe Cortana wanted more knowledge in order to find a way to defeat the Flood.

And the copy kept copying to the point where the system was so bogged down with copies that it couldn't do anything.

Actually, it would have been nice to overload High Charity's systems with copies... but I guess it didn't have time to occur to anyone.
