Xbox Live is not the only place where bigots and annoying people dwell. These people flock to forums and block the tubes.

I am proposing a mute system for this forum that would allow members to block the posts of selected members.

Unrelated: Why is the subject not used as the topic name?

You are all loved beyond measure.
I, like you, am a light-sound-vibration complex that resonates with others. I have hopes and dreams and ambitions, just like you! I AM, and so are you! Yes, we are one and the same, you and I.

It wouldn't be all that useful. You can simply skip over posts of users you don't like, while on XBL you must listen to people unless they're musted.

I agree. I know that some would think "How hard is it to just not look at a certain person's posts?" I know that I always feel tempted to read whatever someone is saying, especially when I'm trying to avoid them. It would be nice to be able to hide a certain individual completely when they are irritating me.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Thats could confuse the person doing the muting. Like if the person they muted actully made a good post that was the topic of a major discussion, you wouldnt have any idea what was going on!

Instead of removing the post entirely, you could always just hide it with a notice saying that it has been hidden.

A big part to success in Halo 3 or and Halo game is not getting frustrated when you feel you've been killed unjustly. Stay solid, and realize that its easier for you to come back when the other guys cant control their anger and frustration. Its hard to aim when your an emotional wreck :)

The post, or at least the important parts of it, would probably be quoted if it turns out to be such a big deal. One can get the gist of a discussion that is being started by a post without actually having to see that post.

Then again, if a person was enough of a troll to be ignored, they are unlikely to make any good points in a major discussion.

Blocking posts on these forums doesn't seem very cool to me. Blocking posts on these forums and then XBL recognizing it and automatically muting the linked gamertag sounds friggin' awesome. Imagine how many morons you could automatically ignore due to their obvious jackassery. I bet if you spent enough time here on bungie.net that you would rarely hear jerkasses online eventually.

I'm not usually one for blocking conversation but in this instance, I can see more good come out of it then I'm going to describe.

Jackassery.

I think Impy may be on to something.
Mute in H3 from forum gamertag maybe?

it's done so that stupid poll questions are no longer hidden. Now we can (or at least should) immediately see what the poll is about, which should be what the thread is all about.

Splendid. Bravo. Once again you have taken a thread to the next level through witty, insightful comments that others rely on. Pure Genius.

And yeah, I wish If I muted people, they'd stay muted until I unmuted them, including in the postgame lobby.

They do... If you mute someone and then, 2 years later, you're matched up with them again, you won't be able to hear them. :\

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

While I appreciate the frustration and thought that gave birth to this idea, it is a potential feature that I (and I suspect some or many other people) would never use. I personally have never been offended or annoyed enough at anyone's post to have the desire to "mute" them permanently. Another problem is the one previously hinted at: that it might make a thread confusing -- especially if one does not remember that they "muted" a prolific poster. Finally, of course, is the factor of my own personal thoughts on free speech and the fact that almost everone has something good to say sometimes and that it is always better for me to hear MORE and then make my own decision on what to give credit to. I understand, though, that others prefer to filter what they see ahead of time. I simply do not feel this way.

I do not see any major issues with this idea, however, aside from the fact that it would rarely be used by some (perhaps many) members. Not to mention that the number of people on these forums who make jackass posts are so high and the number of new accounts created so constant that you might spend more time muting than reading at times.

For those reasons, I do not affirmatively feel that this idea is a good or bad one, but I do think that it would be a feature of the site that I would never use.

I'm neutral on this one, guys.
Now wouldn't that have been easier to say?
I'm against it, for all of Foman's (snipped) reasons.
Obvious benefits are outweighed by costs, both obvious and hidden.

Haha, dalmedya people in my profession often find it impossible to adhere to your motto, "If you can say it on one line, don't use two."

It reminds me of the old lawyer joke, "Q: How do you know when a lawyer is dead? A: Because his lips aren't moving."

Okay, sorry guys, back on topic.

There should be no subject if the poll question is the thread title. (IMO)

anyone who's played less than you is a noob

Nice idea :-)

you could "mark as irrelevant" like you can do as the admin of a facebook group - the post is still there, just hidden til you expand it.

I've always maintained that instead of banning trolls, their posts should just be hidden from everyone but them.

And they don't get told about it.

That way, they continue spamming but no-one can hear them... They don't realise what's happened so they don't just go and create another account to get around the ban.

The only problem is that it would be hard to appeal a ban... But it could be reserved for obvious offenders or those that have been warned several times before (they can contest the warnings).

So it would be like they had voice sending turned off in Halo but didn't realise... They can shout and curse all they like, and it wouldn't affect anyone. [:

Strange evolution how people have come to believe

If what someone's post are that out of line, they'll get banned and you wont have to see thier posts anyway.

If you are offended personally by what people say, you have to understand that it was you who chose to come here. Bungie.net is the way it is. Problem members get dealt with eventually.

I honestly dont want to deal with people posting things that have been discussed already simply because thier delicate nature caused them to block half the users posts in a thread. Believe it or not, even the most dimwitted immature member eventually posts something worth reading.
