Yes, the site will go down. Site traffic always fluctuates during significant events pertaining to bungie, but that is always followed by a decrease in activity.
Look at the beta. The halo 3 beta forums were ridiculously active around three weeks ago, when the beta first came out. Now that the craze has died down a bit, so have the forums.
Honestly, is it so bad to have some people leave? I don't think this place will ever become "boring" at all. If anything, the forums will definitely improve once the band-wagon halo fans have left, and the hardcore bungie community members are the only ones that remain.
Look at the forums now, as an entirety. They may be active, but they aren't very friendly. Plenty of immature individuals make accounts on a whim, and then sign on to make a few brainless posts. Nowadays, in many cases, you will be flamed for posting a perfectly legitimate idea. This site is filled with (for the lack of a better word) clowns who can't take it when someone disagrees with their opinion, and will be very rude to their fellow bungie fans. Some will simply start arguments for the fun of it.
It's perfectly understandable for new members to be feeling themselves around a bit, but it can get annoying seeing a steady dose of threads in The Septagon asking questions such as "How do I link my gamertag?" or "How do I delete my account?" popping up every day. When they don't have their question answered, some will make a duplicate thread to get attention. In most cases, the answer can be found through a simple check at the bottom of the page.
Despite some of the fools around here, there are plenty of true bungie fans and contributors that hang around on this site. I know that many of the older members have nostalgic feelings about some of the older days on bungie.net, back when it was created in the late 90's. The site wasn't as flashy or crisp back then, but the community was great. Bungie wasn't as main-stream a group of developers yet. It had true fans, not band-wagoners. The seventh column was a great place to be, with all of the tight-knit chapters and a feeling of companionship between everyone on this site. I wasn't around during this time, but I've heard of it.
After halo 3 has been around for a couple years, this site might just return to its original state. The fair-weather halo fanatics will get bored after a while, and the community could be filtered down to those worthy to represent it. I wish bungie the best of luck with their future projects, because they deserve it, but the real fans will be the ones to stay if things are kept under the radar.
very well put. I'm pretty sure i was with the halo 2 surge, just a little late, but i've always been around and i noticed a HUGE boom when halo 3 was announced and a slightly smaller one when the beta came out. My prediction is about the same as yours, except with no other halo related games that are being developed by bungie, i think alittle more people will leave and the site will just die down after all the hype is over.
