@avmf8: First of all, so I don't sound like a complete uncaring bastard, I'm sorry to hear about your computer troubles. Sadly, that is precisely why it is cheaper to learn how to build them and then build them yourself rather than buy them from a company like HP (who, additionally, tend to use the cheapest parts they can buy and then inflate them 300% or more before selling them to customers). Likewise, I'm sorry to hear about your health issues and I know how it feels to live paycheck to paycheck.
That said, don't come in here and try to "school" us.
I'm the one who said WHEN DX10 games come out you'll need Vista. I did not say Halo 2 Vista was DX10.
Your complaint is not new and is shared by a lot of the folks in the Maw. A bunch of us are particularly unimpressed that Microsoft is leveraging Vista sales on the back of H2V and Shadowrun. However, that was Microsoft's decision to make just as it was Microsoft's decision to link DX10 to Vista only. Yeah it sucks having to keep up with the Joneses (or, in our case, Moore's Law), but what can we do? Technology moves forward, companies make decisions, and we have to decide whether we're going to move forward with them and take their products or not.
Edit:
In response to the "they won't have a company anymore", I'll say two things. Microsoft's largest profit base isn't their OS division, it's their Office division. Microsoft can live with mediocre sales of Vista because they turn more profit on sales of Microsoft Office than they do on Windows. Additionally, with their OEM licensing, Vista is making money for Microsoft on every new Dell, HP/Compaq, Toshiba, Gateway, and Lenovo PC sold. It's nearly impossible to order a "new" manufactured PC with XP still installed on it. This is where they get the bulk of their profits of OS sales from - OEM manufacturers, not retail.
