You've got to think crazy, of course, because you only get innovation by refining insanity. - Jason Jones

So i was reading an interview that lars the multiplayer guy did with gamepro. He said that the saved film feature is awesome and it was a great way to build the community. I got to thinking what if in groups people or leaders of the group were able to upload game videos to their groups. This could be used in a multitude of different ways.

Maybe in a group people will start having get togethers every night or weekly and uploading videos from the night to their groups for discussion.
Or
Maybe here on b.nets website on the front page or somewhere else there could be a video uploaded weekly or daily showing the best game played during the day or something. Maybe the guy who has the best statistical game would get his video hosted here on the site for all to see.

Any thoughts?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I agree with Lars. Even in its current restricted format, people are using the saved games feature to make incredibly cool (and often hilarious) videos. How something will look in the saved game film has become something that people are discussing even during games now, which I think is fantastic and really good for the Bungie Community.

I am not so sure, however, about allowing videos and files to be generally uploaded to the Bungie.net servers for viewing by groups. I'm not much of a tech guy, so I can't really speak to the specifics of it. But looking to sell 10 million games, that's an awful lot of potential saved film videos (and they would have to be videos rather than saved-game data files) being hosted by Bungie.net, at the same time that is is functioning as a Halo 3 stats bank and dealing with increased web traffic due to its popular video game. Moreover, there seems to be some possible potential for abuse of this feature -- just imagine ten guys from the same clan all posting their clan's Halo 3 "24 hour Release Day Halothon with No Kill Limits" video -- all from their own perspective or edited slightly differently.

I understand your point about increasing and revitalizing the utility of Bungie.net's groups with this feature, but I'm just not sure about the idea's feasibility. Maybe someone else can speak with more authority on the subject.

Personally, I think that groups that provide links to videos hosted on other sites designed for file-hosting will see the same amount of popularity regardless of where the videos themselves are stored. There are plenty of those groups out there that use YouTube or other video hosting sites, and I don't think that the community necessarily would be brought any closer if the files were hosted on Bungie's servers rather than elsewhere.

As for Bungie itself posting a in-game video file every once in awhile, I think that this is a great idea. Not so sure about the whole "pick out the best game statistically and post it" thing, but posting the Weekly Humpday Challenge video (as previously suggested in a couple of other threads) would be great.

To be honest, though, I'm a little indifferent either way on this last point.

I do understand where you are coming from as far as the technical standpoint. That is nothing a good compression tool cant handle, and decompress it when you click it to play. Limiting a group to only one vdeo might not be so bad, sure it would take some room but you can get massive storage for cheap these days. The only problem is the bandwidth really, maybe some compatibility issues here and there.

Maybe bungie could choose a saved film at random, or have people send in films sometimes maybe once a week for a certain period of time and they select one that is cool so they post it for a couple of days.

Anything is possible. And who said bungie would have to pay for such a feature? Their parent company just happens to have a little money. And why wouldn't someone be able to have the option to upload at least 1 video per month to a bungie server somewhere. Or maybe a server would have a limited number of submissions per month that could make it to them. They would be uploaded to the server as the "game data" and once put on the site recreated into a video just as they are on the beta. That would make having your video on b.net all the more special considering i dont know 100 videos are able to be sent to bungie a month or so.

sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

While I definitely see your point, and think it would be great if implicated, I think technical costs outweigh the benefits.

I would love to be able to get on B.net and review films with other group members and discuss strategy, so the next night when we go on Live we're ready for some pwnage, but I don't see it happening. It's a great idea, just really hard to introduce and people would need a lot of free time to use it properly

You are all haters. Just kidding. Sure there are technical difficulties, but what dosn't anymore. If people want it bad enough something can be done. Hell if i had a little more money i would host a video myself and hey wait thats a good idea.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

This is a pretty cool idea. Even if you let it just be one per group. The only thing as that there are many great sites already established that can do the hosting. So I do not see the web team creating such a feature.

Maybe you dont understand, I am not suggesting that the "game data" be uploaded in video form to a bungie server. I am suggesting that the "game data" be sent to a b.net server, the group could them post a link or some sort of icon in their group showing that there is a video there. When they click the link or icon the server would piece together the video on their end and play it just like a regular wmv or whatever format they like through a browser or pop up window or something. You would need nothing, and all the models and code would be on their server.

Maybe I am not explaining this exactly as I see it in my head. My apologies for any confusion.
