Soccer Moms: "Videogames cause violence!"
Gamers: "Videogames don't cause violence! Gamers are not violent people."
Obbi: "Videogames further support violence in already violent people."

Edit: To further explain, I am for harsher videogame restriction laws. I'm not at all worried that violent games make people violent, but I believe that it may put violence in a positive light that would support violence to already violent people.

I agree with Obbi that video games support violence in already violent people.

First of all, I personally have trouble believing anything posted on a site that has a grammatical error in the introductory line.

NOTE:

MAVAV is dedicated to educating parents in today's fastest increasing threat and danger to our child's health and way of life

Should be:

MAVAV is dedicated to educating parents on today's fastest increasing threat and danger to
their child's health and way of life.

The first way (found on their website) does not appear right to me.

As well, ALL the links to their “articles” are down so I have no way of telling who or what their sources are and analyzing whether or not they are creditable.

Regarding the site’s content, describing those people responding to their e-mail address as “feral young children” seems very elitist and inappropriate for an atmosphere of discussion. An attack on the character of the other side is never a fair and reasonable tactic, and just shows that the creators of this site are too close-minded to accept any other view points other that their own. The feral statement is also inaccurate in the face of the high quality and obviously well thought out content of those letters that have been posted in this thread (good job guys, good letters!).

I have yet to see any solid scientific proof that video games create or encourage violenent behavior.

I have yet to find scientific proof that video games are addictive.

There are two types of addiction, physical and psycological. I doubt that video games could be physically addictive as there are no chemicals that enter your body when you play them. (unless...) As for psychological addiction, I think I'm psychologically addicted to milk. You can be psychologically addicted to anything. No milk for you!

I agree with ZogsSexWax, violence is cause primarily by poor parenting, not by the media. A good book on the effect of culture and parenting on children and the like is Home-Alone America: The Hidden Toll of Day Care, Wonder Drugs, and Other Parent Substitutes by Mary Eberstadt. Look for an accurate review on the internet if you don’t want to read it in it’s entirety (I don’t blame you). The Economist has a good one. Essentially it's about parent's neglecting their children.

Responses to other posts:

Shiska: Whoa, huge shiska-burn! That was pretty mean but, sadly, accurate. I agree with you. Also, what do you think about a site that basically attacks your profession?

Simmons: I think it was wrong to lie. If you get a response, you should reply and tell them your real age, just to be fair. Good threads and posts, by the way. I like all of them.

Obbi: Good points. I agree, except with the harsher laws. The user must be responsible for their use of the product, not vice-versa. Censorship is just a bad idea in any case.

GREAT thread.

Sorry this post is so amazingly bloated. It's a real beast.

I dont beleive violence is furthered in violent people by video games. I beleive that what my report stated is, for the most part true. not all the "theories", but the facts that support video games. The supporting facts were actually conducted on people, while the many theories i stated were not. I beleive video games are an extremely good outlet for anger. When im mad, i either yell and cuss and throw things, or i play video games. I see video games as a more "constructive" way of releasing suppresed rage. after playing a VIOLENT(oh no!!) game for a while, i usually am cooled and feel no need to be a total ass to other people. But these are my thoughts, and if you agree, then good for you, but if not, then you're welcome to your opinion.
