First of all, I personally have trouble believing anything posted on a site that has a grammatical error in the introductory line.
NOTE:
MAVAV is dedicated to educating parents in today's fastest increasing threat and danger to our child's health and way of life
Should be:
MAVAV is dedicated to educating parents on today's fastest increasing threat and danger to
their child's health and way of life.
The first way (found on their website) does not appear right to me.
As well, ALL the links to their “articles” are down so I have no way of telling who or what their sources are and analyzing whether or not they are creditable.
Regarding the site’s content, describing those people responding to their e-mail address as “feral young children” seems very elitist and inappropriate for an atmosphere of discussion. An attack on the character of the other side is never a fair and reasonable tactic, and just shows that the creators of this site are too close-minded to accept any other view points other that their own. The feral statement is also inaccurate in the face of the high quality and obviously well thought out content of those letters that have been posted in this thread (good job guys, good letters!).
I have yet to see any solid scientific proof that video games create or encourage violenent behavior.
I have yet to find scientific proof that video games are addictive.
There are two types of addiction, physical and psycological. I doubt that video games could be physically addictive as there are no chemicals that enter your body when you play them. (unless...) As for psychological addiction, I think I'm psychologically addicted to milk. You can be psychologically addicted to anything. No milk for you!
I agree with ZogsSexWax, violence is cause primarily by poor parenting, not by the media. A good book on the effect of culture and parenting on children and the like is Home-Alone America: The Hidden Toll of Day Care, Wonder Drugs, and Other Parent Substitutes by Mary Eberstadt. Look for an accurate review on the internet if you don’t want to read it in it’s entirety (I don’t blame you). The Economist has a good one. Essentially it's about parent's neglecting their children.
Responses to other posts:
Shiska: Whoa, huge shiska-burn! That was pretty mean but, sadly, accurate. I agree with you. Also, what do you think about a site that basically attacks your profession?
Simmons: I think it was wrong to lie. If you get a response, you should reply and tell them your real age, just to be fair. Good threads and posts, by the way. I like all of them.
Obbi: Good points. I agree, except with the harsher laws. The user must be responsible for their use of the product, not vice-versa. Censorship is just a bad idea in any case.
GREAT thread.
Sorry this post is so amazingly bloated. It's a real beast.
