Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Hell, H2 was never any good to begin with.

You don't need to troll every H2V thread and bash it in every one. :/

How was it not? If it was never any good to begin with, how did it stay the most played game on XBL, only to be surpassed by Gears here recently?

I wouldn't say H2V is dead, it's just off to a tremendously slow start. A lot of people want the game, but don't have Vista. Some that do have Vista, doesn't want to pay 50 dollars for a game that's significantly old. When the price drops down to a somewhat reasonable $20, I would image the servers will get a burst. With so many people complaining the game is Vista only, it's ridiculous to claim that the game is dead. When Vista becomes the norm, I believe people will flock over to H2V because by that time, the game will be pretty cheap. that's my personal opinion on it for the most part, but I think it's a safe assumption.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

Even though I have performance issues with H2V, I stlll like it. No matter what you say about the game or Bungie, it will always remain the same, stop trying to bring down what you don't have.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

My thoughts on the game so far is that the campaign is very fun and if I had never played Halo PC I would probably love the multiplayer. Not having to lead based upon ping is great for the most part. Before I get flamed, let me say that for as flawed as Halo PC netcode is, it is unique and ridiculously fun to try to master. There was never really any doubt that H2V would get "fixed" netcode.

So with the lead issue being a non issue, it comes down to gameplay. The croutching thing annoys me. Essentially, the importance of croutching and jumping has been reversed. The croutch key is basically useless when moving. Ok...

Weapons are another matter. Honestly, the lack of pistol is devasting. The sniping is still satisfying, but the great equalizer is gone. If you thought Halo PC was about map control, you ain't seen nothing. Which sort of brings home my overal feeling about the weapons of H2, they are either overpowered or downright pathetic. Frankly, most of the complaints I heard from the Halo Xbox players were about spot on with my thoughts on this issue.

I think ultimately if you can accept that H2 is a different game than Halo PC you will enjoy the game tremendously both campaign and MP. If you approach it as "they were trying to improve on Halo gameplay" then you will be dissapointed. Understand that H2V does not include picking someone off 100 yards away with a pistol 3sk.

The game has been out in Europe for just a week so no big wonder there are not to much players online, nevertheless, yesterday i got a good amount of servers and i had huge fun playing the multiplayer, even if i played Halo 1 online for ages it still felt good to me.

I find plenty of games with players in them. The list is limited, but seems to be getting better with time (regardless of your opinion of what time will tell, this has been my experience). I agree that we need more servers with lower caps, 4v4 is fantastic. I also agree that the heavy weapon games get boring. It doesn't take much skill to blast someone with a rocket or lunge at them with the sword. I think the community is getting better, but I can't say what will happen when H3 comes out. I know that I will spend most of my time on that. What I've noticed with PC games tho, the community just grows and grows. And you can always find a game for a few years after it comes out. Take Halo PC or Unreal Tournament 2004 for example: there are still tons of people playing those games. Console games tend to die out while the PC games keep more players longer. But we'll see.

Off Topic: "Going Gold" is in reference to the color of the dvd that is the master copy of the game that they send out to the publisher; traditionally, that dvd is gold. So a game must "go gold" before it is released. It is the same terminology they use in the music industry. It's not a reference to how many copies they've sold.

@blunt
I really want your assessment to be true, I really do.

I just think that the game is marred by poorly configured servers, reliance on the "newest" OS, and the Live service. To folks who don't already subscribe to Live, having a game with the Live designation may give them pause to consider whether they want to get involved in the Live! world or not.

Honestly, Vista is the difference between H1PC, UT2K4 and H2V. I mean, I'm looking at both the H1PC box and UT2K4 box as I type this and the "OS Requirements" are 98SE/ME/2000/XP. At the time those games came out, those requirements included nearly everyone who owned a Windows based machine. H2V requires an OS that's only been sold (retail) since January so the adoption rate is nowhere near as high.

Do I care that H2V was never designed for XP? Nah, cuz I have Vista and it runs solid as a rock. But the fact that they've really limited who can run this game to ONE OS is really going to hurt. By the time Vista is widespread, hopefully the game will be half the price it is now and people will consider picking it up as a "budget" title. But I fear that by that time, H2V will be a fleeting memory taking a back seat to other PC games like Crysis or to other console releases.

Is this game dead already?

Technically speaking software is not alive so it can not be dead.

What you are really asking is “why hasn’t this product met my immediate expectations” or more simply you are asking “why can’t I get what I want, when I want it, and I want it now!”

Here is something to chew on:

The Halo PC 1 & Custom Edition games were released in 2004 and still have a healthy life span. Halo PC was recently reported to have over 130,000 players each month. The Halo Maps website has logged over 4 million downloads for what people declared a dead game at birth.

Windows XP is reaching end of life in 2008 and by the end of this year all new Windows PC’s will be equipped with Vista. Although businesses will be slow to adopt Vista, home PC ‘s will move rather quickly to Vista since it is expected that there will be over 150 million PCs sold for US homes by the end of next year all of which will be running Vista. If just 10% of those new PC’s purchase Halo 2 for Vista then sales will be over 15 million copies. And remember there have already been over 40 million copies of Vista sold.

I doubt that Microsoft is looking for the quick sales like the Xbox game did but instead is looking for a longer term sales strategy as users keep the game “alive” by making custom maps.

To answer your question: No H2v is not dead from the publishers perspective, or mine, however, no one else can speak for you so if you think it’s dead then well that is what you think regardless of the facts.

Thanks for taking all that time to sound pretentious.

I never stated my own opinion, I just asked if it was dead because of the very small amount of players. Especially when compared with even Call of Duty which is still packed with people playing.

I know that Vista is holding a lot of people back...but being lucky to find a server with 10+ players on is...not good.

Any attempt a being ostentatious was purely accidental and a resultant use of both my academic and practical education. A trait I am guessing not normally exhibited in the forums you frequent. I apologize if I clouded a purely subjective and emotional question, "Is the game dead", with an objective review of the cogent facts involved. I sincerely thought you were looking for a real answer and not just a chorus of sycophants who never took the time to analyze the situation from several points of view. But apparently I was wrong. I will not make the mistake again of assuming you are interested in a real discourse or discussion of the merits of the supposition ("is the game dead").

So in light of that and to fit in better with what I am guessing you expect.... huh.. like, yea man.. lik, the game is dead dude! Just like you said...

Just because loads of kiddies played it past their bedtime, does not make that certain game "good". Community-wise, of course H2 was a ...sigh... success, but GAME-wise, H2 was just...not a good game.

Yeah, but don't get me wrong, I loved H2's campaign. It was more epic than the first. Hell, if the multiplayer in H2 wasn't so bad, I'd like H2 just as much as H1...xD

The game lacks players, the players dictate what will get done in the game ultimately. But with that said there are plenty of people to paly with. I consntantly find myself in 16 player games. Is it better than HALO PC in terms of people playing? Nah.. not yet. I'm keeping hope the XP fix helps the inclusion of addtional players.. As far as weapons, everytime I make a game I make sure the starting weapons are Plasma pistol and BR. Yes The combo is overpowered but so is the 3sk of the pistol. if you adjust yourself and learn this new way of takin advatage of a over powered weapon combo then you'll fill right in.

I'm always looking for games on HALO 1 & 2 for PC if you want in look for me. Bckon.. watch yourself I'm sure I'll eat you.. ;-)
