I currently have a P4 3GHz machine, integrated audio/video, 19" widescreen monitor, 502MB RAM

I was thinking a Core 2 Duo and an 8800GTX, and 2GB RAM, and get vista for my b-day.

I could go a little over the budget as well.

Well you could get the QX6700 processor, or you could get a 8800 GTx Ultra.

Graphics Card
Memory
Optional Power Supply
Processor
Mobo

Did an estimate of the price, it should be in that range. Make adjustments to the Processor/Mobo as you see fit.

Get this 2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 1000mhz Ram, I just ordered some for my new build... it's amazing ram, overclocks like a beast!

I don't know if a 8800GTX is worth it... by the time Crysis comes out, we'll probably be in the second generation of DX10 cards, so perhaps you want to look into getting a 320mb GTS, and upgrade around the Holidays this year. You probably want a P35 chipset, as they will be supporting the upcoming "penryn" 45nm processors from Intel... although, they don't support SLI, so you might want to go with a 68/50i motherboard. You're probably going to want to get a new powersupply - these Corsair powersupplys have been getting awesome reviews... Other reputable powersupply brans are: FSP, Enermax... Of course, any Core 2 Duo will meet your needs... an e6420 would fit the bill nicely.

Make sure to look for coupons here: http://currentcodes.com/, I got $10 off my Buy.com order!

The 8800 went down to $150 on some sites. It's now or never.

LOL with prices like this, no wonder most pc gamers ran to the console.

Its a freakin bargain IMO.

$500 for a vid card that will be a door stop in 3 years...

Piss on Nvidia and Ati.

That is the price you pay for technology, the same could be applied to the PS3, 360, or Wii.

You should find something better to spend your money on. Or better yet, put it in the bank or something so it gathers interest. Just because you have a thousand dollars doesn't mean you should go blow it right away.

But if he's going to college, I agree that he shouldn't spend all of it on a computer... You can get an alright computer and still have money left to buy things for college (unless your parents have that covered ;-).

You are going to college right -.-

There's something to be said of frugality. But I guess you don't have to worry about car payments, gas prices (wtf is up with that anyways?) and other such expenditures.

You could invest in the stock market. I've got a couple G's kickin around and it's growing every day, albeit rather slowly. But it's still there if I need it.

And the leafblower rears it's ugly head again.

I agree with some of what's been said before; invest some money in a college education. One of my biggest regrets in life is not continuing my education right after high school. I waited about six years before I continued my education. Big mistake! If at all possible, go straight into college, don't take a few years or semesters off simply because you've graduated high school. This is probably the most important advice I think I could ever impart to another.
