This I'll never, ever, EVER understand, but I would love to get a straight-up, honest answer from Bungie about this- why on earth is the Halo 2 Multiplayer melee attack so rediculously overpowered? Explanations, anyone???

I don't think it's overpowered, but the melee lunge distance can get ridiculous at times.

Na it's pretty good the way it is but yeah the distance can be crazy, the sword should also be toned down that's way overpowered

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Go play the game without the 1.1 update, they were seriously weak.

They weapon lunge might need to be turned down for normal weapons and the sword but, the damage for both should stay the same.

The sword would be completly useless if it was made any weaker.

It's the hard heart that kills...

They're not; melee attacks are only devastating from the rear, quasi-simulating the vulnerability of an unsuspecting target.

Front, side, the melee does less damage. For my money, the upfront melee attack is underpowered...

No, if you ever turn down the melee attacks, noone will use them because it will become pointless. The reason they are so powerful is because you have to take the time and do it.

  • 06.13.2007 11:56 PM PDT

What I don't understand is why you think the long-established halo melee system is overpowered. It's not like other games where you can tap a nearly-dead enemy to finish them off. It's an integral part of the combat system. It worries me that you would call something overpowered that has always supposed to have been like that. It's like saying the warthog has too many wheels.

They're powerful because they're meant to be. It's not an accident and it's not an imbalance.

If you think about it the MC's armor gives him like super strength so it makes sense.

Paraphrased from Vidoc Is Quisnam Protero Damno!
There was this thing we really didn't identify in Halo 2. That if you spawn everybody with a dual wieldable weapon like the SMG, it changed the game. people will stop stopped meleeing and people stopped grenading because when your dual wielding you can't do either of those... The Assault Rifle works really well with the golden three things of Halo - Weapons, Grenades, and Melees"

As one of my fellow B.net regulars posted earlier, play Halo 2 without the 1.1 patch and you will see how weak the melee is. The people at Bungie, and from what I gather from the Vidoc Is Quisnam Protero Damno!, when they released Halo 2 they erred with the SMG and made melee and grenades too weak. Halo 3 is a way of fixing that, but as a temporary fix, that is why Bungie released the 1.1 patch. However, the 1.1 patch opened the door for some of the infamous button glitches that have plagues Halo 2 for the last year and a half.

Now, melees are powerful because of the patch 1.1, but I think it was a way of trying to steer Halo 2 in the correct direction after it was released.

worst teacher ever watch it
me

new montage

done by Rogue Prophet: not meant to show how good he just sweet clips

exactly, it was stupid before the 1.1 update you would need about 5 melees for a kill, very rediculous

And that's the way it SHOULD be AT THE VERY MOST. Why? Because it actually made you use weapons at close range, making for fun firefights up close and personal. Now, however, I've seen some people in Rumble Pit (before it became unranked) go through ENTIRE GAMES USING NOTHING BUT MELEES, and, amazing as it seems, EVEN ACTUALLY WON A GAME like that. How shameful knowing that 550+ years in the future, punching someone in the chest does MORE damage than 3 shots from a battle rifle and ALMOST AS MUCH DAMAGE as a chest-shot with a sniper rifle or beam rifle!!! How pathetically RI-DIC-U-LOUS!!!!! -Charlie.

My friend's Xbox is v1.0 - we played a splitscreen 4 player Slayer on Coagulation the other day - It was the most fun I ever had in Halo 2. The Battle rifle was actually fun to use

You know, I've seen only one person mention that the MC is a GENETICALLY ENHANCED human, with ENHANCED STRENGTH. It makes sense to me that the melee is powerful when you consider just how strong MC really is. He can flip tanks, people. I don't think it would be that hard for him to quickly and easily beat someone to death.

I say tone it down. Either the power, or the lunge. Seeing lunges from the ground into the air makes me think of Shoryukens on street fighter, not a FPS. Leave the flying crap to the sword. If not, make the power weaker. One hit to the back of the skull is fine, but when you don't even need to use gunfire up close, its a bit ridiculous. Super strength or not, everyone else is on a level playing field. Or is Mister Chef's armor so weak to martial arts that it cracks after 2 hits as opposed to dozens of machine gun bullets? If that's the case, I'd like to see spiked knuckles ala Hexen in Halo 3.

1. The melees are powerful so people will use them.
2. The melee power is appropriate to the chief. When a bullet hits a normal human, flesh and organs are punctured. When a Spartan hits a normal human, bones break, and that's without MJOLNIR armor.

The melee system is ok except for the lunge but I think halo should be called a First-Person Melee'er instead of Shooter because I find myself melee'ing more than shooting in some games like midship.

Melee's should be incredibly powerful. Don't forget he's a super human along with the suit which magnifys his already awesome strength by about 10 (I think? Read those books too long ago to remember). Yes I agree with everyone who says the lunge range is insanely huge, because it is, especially with host.

The melee is perfect the way it is. If you turn it up it would be pointless to have a shotgun or the sword because if you charge at me with shotgun and I can melee you and kill you just as effectivly than im just gonna post up with sniper and br instead of choosing a mid to shortrange weapon Seeing as though if im posting with a sniper you sneek in with shottie im just gonna turn and melee you and whoever hits first wins. If you turn the melee power down than you would be gridlocked in closerange battles and the beatdown button would nearly be rendered useless seeing as though if it already takes 2-3 hits from the front to score a kill with a beatdown now imagine if it took 3-4 or 4-5 hits would you use it in that situation? It seems to me you need to look at how you use the melee function. Think about it. Your charging an opponent and hes shooting you with dual smg's and your shooting him with dual smg's you fired at virtually the same moment the only difference is that when your fist meets his face you get the kill from the melee and he was a second short of doing the same to you. Seems to me to be pretty balanced in the situations where the melee is most commonly used.

I believe, according to Bungie, that if we outfitted our army full of boxing glove-clad Muhammad Ali clones, the Covenant would stand no chance.

Two beatdowns = More powerful than a full clip of SMG bulets
