Subject: Why the heck are melees SOOOOOO incredibly powerful when compared t...

Let there be CHAOS!

But if Chief's punches are that strong, shouldn't he also be able to withstand punches that strong?

Meleeing should've been weaker and faster like in Halo 1.

Go play the game without the 1.1 update, they were seriously weak.
And that's the way it SHOULD be AT THE VERY MOST. Why? Because it actually made you use weapons at close range, making for fun firefights up close and personal. Now, however, I've seen some people in Rumble Pit (before it became unranked) go through ENTIRE GAMES USING NOTHING BUT MELEES, and, amazing as it seems, EVEN ACTUALLY WON A GAME like that. How shameful knowing that 550+ years in the future, punching someone in the chest does MORE damage than 3 shots from a battle rifle and ALMOST AS MUCH DAMAGE as a chest-shot with a sniper rifle or beam rifle!!! How pathetically RI-DIC-U-LOUS!!!!! -Charlie.

Quote from RvB "Alright dude, calm down. Take a chill pill, if you don't have a chill pill take one of those chill strips. You put it on your tongue it dissolves. chiiiill" Anyway it makes sense to have melee attackes with the amount of damage that they do.....have. Your playing as a spartan super-soldier, or an elite who is as strongas as a spartan, with armour that's capable of flipping a 66 ton tank and you think they're overpowered.......? And with the discussion about the sword I don't think they're overpowered. In fact if a sword guy goes head to head with a shotgunner, even if they lunge at you all you have to do is crouch, ther'es a high chance that the shotgunner could come out alive if he knows how to use it.

Because the game is about accuracy at its basic level i feel the melee is fine , its level of damage is i think set well. what i dont like is the lunges and the difference of damage from a moving melee to a stationary one, same with the sword it should be a set level of damage, regardless if your in mid air or kneeling.

Ya they are way too power full since when does geting hit hurt more than getting shot in the head... also i lately having been getting really pissed because i go to hit some one and i go through them or i can see the guy in front of me and he assintaes me wyf is that. they may say its just a glitch in the game well they played the game before it came out so why didn't they fix it i think they just suck at making video games yes it's a cool game but it's anoying how good it COULD be but they didn't make it. And halo 3 is just stupid they shoulda just fixed the dumb crap in halo2 and made more maps you can snipe on. one more thing double shot is fine i don't do it but not many ppl can hit you while they do it itf you strafe but BXR is they dubest thing after noob combo. its like wow your dumb how does B then X then R kill you but R then B doesn't you have to do R BXB to kill them that way i don't understand that , what it comes down to is bungie you suck.

The melee strength right now is the same as it was in Halo 1. Same goes for the running and jumping damage bonus. I don't know why you even mentioned melee speed because it depends on the weapon you're holding.

IMO the melee is fine. Before the 1.1 update melees were so weak it wasn't even an option in close range and it basically came down to whoever had the biggest gun. The damage increase made it useful and made surviving close range encounters possible if you didn't have the firepower. I don't care if it's realistic or not for a Spartan because it made the fights more interesting.

The novels explain why the Master Chief is so strong. His MJOLNIR armor does more than protect him. It also amplifies his melee strikes to super human strength. Its the exuivalent to getting hit by a car almost. You can't tone it down it would take away from the character.

The melee lung can be really ridiculious at times, but its alright strength wise.

Spartan vs spartan combat should not be a two hit fight. I think two melees is too fast to kill someone. It really does prevent people from having to use weapons. Its the same in h3 already. People say it takes away from the strory because MC is a beast. Did you know nobody gets to play as MC in multiplayer? If its a level playing feild spartans shouldnt have glass jaws. Also on the complaint about the differance from 1.0 and 1.1...why did it get changed so drasticly? It used to take 5 melees now it takes 2, thats an increase of about 80% power, i think that is absurd. 3 melees is my opinion of what is should take to drop someone.

you know what i wanna know why are ppl in the halo 2 forum when they could be in the halo 3 forum and also why would bungie make a special update to "tone down the melees" just because you made this forum. get over it

prostyle1040, don't even post on these forums if your that stupid, you seem to have no clue what BxR does, if you did you'd know you can just B+R someone and kill them that way, just slightly slower

as for Melee power, as it is once you get into melee range its not always the best idea to start meleeing often is just better to finish off your foe with a few shots from the SMG/BR/whatever you have, a time where you would want to use melee is if you end up in melee range of someone and you both have full shields, even then after the first hit it can sometimes be wiser to start shooting.

Any lower then what it is now and melee would be USELESS any higher and it really would be over powered, of course you'd still see people using guns but it'd get ridiculous on maps like lockout, melee is fine as it is, button combos other the BxR are very hard to use when you need them in a real fire fight and so most of the time make no difference (though this has nothing to do with melee >.<)

Lunge distance, its needed, the reason for this is so that you can catch someone who is running away at exactly the same speed as you (of course, everyone runs at the same speed!)

The Sword, its just as powerful as it needs to be and is a well balanced weapon.

Ps. its not always 2 hits to kill someone, the damage is based on weather your running jumping or standing still (or walking backwards, i think that's the same as standing still)

Yes: 16%
No: 84%

Lol owned.. I have to agree with the group, I do not believe it's overpowered enough that it requires a degrade.

If you melee someone when you are standing still it doesn't do much damage, but if you are running it does more.

^Yes the melee system has always been like that since Halo CE.

This apple is brown, and rotten. This orange on the other hand, is in relatively average shape. So the orange is definitely the preferable option.
----------You can't compare apples and oranges. You're so dumb.

The lunge is to long in halo 2 but the damage is just right. It adds more strategy and tactics to the game. Now you have to think twice before getting so close because 1 beat down and you have a big diadvantage. However if you miss a melee your pretty much screwed. In the halo 3 beta the melee lunge has been severeing decreased. Same with the swords lunge and lastly the sword has only 10 uses in multiplayer. It makes for a more balanced experience. I mean he's a 1000 ton 7 foot tall genetically enhanced super soilder i think the story melee is justified canonically and in respect to gamplay mechanics as well.

I think bungie should get rid of the melee altogether when you press b you should be able to kick. It would look so much cooler. Or flip up your visor and give him the evil eye. Yea that would work.

i see that you didn't really understand me cause what i meant is if you hit someone then shoot them it should be the same as shooting someone then hitting them but it's not. and lunge is dumb since when can you lunge in the air there is nothign to push of off or is mc now magical.and for the guy whos is like omg in the book blah blah blah i think someone needs to take a step outside and get soem sun ok their champand if mr. mc is so great than why should the meel be any different no matter which way you are moving. and no one said any thing about the going throught ppl thing i mentioned or the assasination thing....

$50,000,000,000 REWARD!!!

Santa Claus must be stopped! He is a menace who is not only guilty of billions of counts of breaking in entering, but also runs an illegal sweatshop of midgets forced to work for no pay using stolen materials to make gifts that infringe on every company and manufacturer around the globe, causing world wide economic disasters. He is to be taken dead or alive!

Its called balance. Melee attacks make Halo fun. Its not realistic, but who cares. It makes the game better. If melees did little damage, no one would use them. Besides, they are not overpowered at all. They are just a bit unrealistic.

I do hate it when your lunge goes right through them. Or when you somehow bounce off them doing no damage when you lunge. Its really bad on jumping melee attacks.

I still don't see how the spartan armor cracks like eggshells after a couple of hits, yet it takes all kinds of bullets from every gun save snipers and rockets to drop one when their shields are down (unless its a headshot). Melee attack shouldn't be a primary weapon unless you have something like a sword for up close. Its always something you fall back on when you run out of ammo or if you're going for the assassination. As for the whole super strength thing, don't you think the armor would also bestow super defense as well seeing how it can take all the bullet abuse? Everyone is on a level playing field too, its not like you got a spartan versus a fat guy in his armor. Unless chief can hit hard, but takes slaps like a blam!. That's probably what it is....

The only thing I see pathetically ridiculous is your own belief that every game should be designed to your personal specifications.

Halo has always been about powerful melees. It is your expectations that are faulty, not the game. You have a large number of games to choose from where they have attempted to chase realism and have useless melee attacks - so don't come crying here because this one doesn't.
