It wouldn't work. People would delete posts that they don't like (like opposition to a debate). The opposition could be in a good format, but if the thread creator won't accept the opposing side, the thread will seem one sided. I see what you mean, but it just wouldn't work.

That feature would be abused to no end. Not a bad idea but the major flaw is the fact that regular users would have some semblance of power.

I seriously needed to update my signature. I'll never forget it, though.

Maybe a "flag this thread", but that's it. It would be abused if it was like that.

I think you should only be able to delete your posts and topics.

You shouldn't be able to delete topics, but you should be able to delete posts. This way the mods don't have to lock threads with big "lock me" signs on them.

You forget that fact that once you post a thread, it is not yours, but the community's. You have no right to delete other's posts, because even if it is just to say they want to kill you, it is their post. While Moderator's have the ability to do such things, everyday users don't (and for good reason) have that right. If you think that Sept. 25th is too soon for Halo 3, and post a thread saying so, great for you. That doesn't mean you have control over discussion on the of Halo 3's release date, it means you started the discussion. I'll use a Reconesque analogy...

If a Senator starts a debate over a new bill, let's say legalizing tripping people who where "heely's" shoes in the mall, he is given the right to speak. After he is done, he sits down, and someone else might want to talk. If Senator A doesn't like what Senator B said, he can't just delete it. He has to accept that other people have other opinions. However, the President of the Senate does have the right to say Senator B is out of line and silence him.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

No, users should not delete anything, in my opinion. Even more, deletion of threads should be a last resort only.

This forces people to think before they post. Moreover, as a previous poster pointed out, a thread created by a user belongs to the Community. Just as a user may not legitimately dictate who does or does not post in a thread they created, they should not have the ability to destroy or undermine the work of other posters.

I can imagine several scenarios where the ability to delete your own post would be bad. If you can't think of any, I'll provide a few of the examples, but I think that if you imagine this hypothetical out to its end, you'll reach the logical conclusion that keeping posts permanent (which, at the very least, forms a record that you actually posted) is the wisest course of action.

The moderators do not delete threads and posts except as a last resort -- even when they are locked and sometimes filled with pretty bad content -- because deletion of threads and posts on public forums is an action that could easily cause more confusion and problems than it solves.

Free speech and open discussion do not call for censorship -- and if you are unwise enough to say something without thinking in a discussion that sparks a response, you should not be able to pretend that it never happened.

As far as flaming and spam within your thread go, those problems are erased when the forum ninjas exercise their good judgment as to choosing whether to blacklist rulebreakers.

All in all, I don't see the ability to delete your own post solving any major problems with these forums that can't be solved in other, better ways -- and the smaller problems that it does solve are outweighed by the potential negaitve detriments.

I respectfully disagree with this idea.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Even moderators refrain from using the delete button as much as possible. There are so many ways to abuse delete, even unintentionally, that it is not appropriate to have as a general tool.

The closest you'll reach to deleting someone's post is editing your own to say "Nevermind." or "Move along, you have nothing to see here."

Only moderators can use it.

The moderators do not delete threads and posts except as a last resort -- even when they are locked and sometimes filled with pretty bad content -- because deletion of threads and posts on public forums is an action that could easily cause more confusion and problems than it solves.
In addition to that, locked threads can always be left around as an example. It's our responsibility to know the rules, COC, and the TOS, but there are some things that we still miss, and seeing a locked thread tells us "don't post topics like that."

As for the report button that was mentioned, I certainly don't see it working out. It's bound to be abused, with members reporting others with the simple justification of "I don't like this guy." If there is some kind of pool for all the reported threads and posts, it would be filled up and spammed in its own way.
