Subject: Bungie Groups – My Thoughts

Damn you bungie, I got my hopes up and you punched me in the jaw. I was expecting something new on the group managing side of thing. I was hoping you would find a magical way of fixing the ever growing problem of dieing and dead groups, find a way to separate good groups from the bad so they would be able to recruit easer or even just add a PM all members button to help admins stay in touch with their whole group.

When the newer hawtness was first implemented into groups I felt let down. All bungie had done was move things around and give them a good polish with new pictures and a new layout. There was nothing on the behind the scenes side that had changed, no new features, nothing!

A lot of group admins put much time and love into there groups hoping they will eventually start to grow by themselves, I am one of those admin. Over the years I have been here I have spent days adding content to my group: Forum Posts, News Posts and many Guides. I am starting to think, what for? My group would just return to it’s dead state if I left. No matter how many people I private message about my group or how many forum posts I make my group just looks like all the other’s from afar.

It is an impossible fight for many, yet every now and then a group manages to achieve decent level of activity. Other groups with good admins continue to fight hoping something will change in the future. When I heard about the new hawtness I though bungie will find a new way to make these small good groups get noticed by a bigger audience but sadly that did not happen.

Bungie is going to be adding stuff later, they are far to busy with halo 3 and other things at the moment, they will get around to helping group's when they have time

It's next to impossible to get your group noticed these days without having to resort to the unorthodox methods. The Classifieds are rarely visited, and one can't even use his or her sig to promote his or her group effectively anymore, now that signatures are hidden.

The Community has to receive some of the blame. Many have just sat around complaining and blaming the web-team, without actually doing much to help the situation.

Listen. I'm going to put this plain and simple.

You can either A) Have no groups now or B) Have groups now with more functionality added in when they have time.

Take your pick.

I'm going to respond to this thread the same way I do every other 'why isn't feature x implemented? I want it now! waaaah!' thread.
The web team is desperately trying to get the site ready for Halo 3.

I say to hell with halo 3! It doesn't even deserve proper capitalization as the English mandates! Bungie needs to get their priorities in order!

First order of business should be Bungie helping out its own people, namely lukems. Second order of business should be defying the laws of physics and creating a giant slingshot shaped like a '7' so that phase 7 can finally be implemented. Thirdly order of business would be giving me a million dollars for no real reason.

Only when all of these steps are completed should one even begin to fathom starting to work on this halo 3 business.

OHHHHH! Cause I was thinking the same thing he was, until u said that. That makes sence now on why the groups weren't as good as I thought they were going to be. Thanx for clearing it up.

Sorry, but no.

Bungie is a video game software company. This just isn't their main priority. THIS is.

So we must wait for them to feel like giving us decent Chapters. Or make your own site. I'm sure you all know plenty to do so. Otherwise, you wouldn't be complaining, right?

I think the success and fun found in groups is far more dependent on what we do than what Bungie does. A few more features would be great but I doubt we will see them until after Halo 3 is released.

Bungie is more than just games. What about the seventh column? What about that awesome community that once was but isn't anymore? I stopped playing halo a long time ago, but a great community is something that I can enjoy for as long as it exists.

Exactly. How is it Bungie's fault that groups are inactive or dying? My main group only has 126 people and it's one of the top ten most active groups on B.net. Why? Because we have a core 20-25 people who post daily.

The best advertisement for your group is the people in it, combined with how active they are out of the forums. If you are engaging and active, people will want to join your group.

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

I think that groups would still be down if Achronos hadn't turned on the switch again. Even when he did open them back up for us he said that there was really nothing new. I'm sure after Halo 3 and the more important things get fixed that they will re-do the groups so they appeal to a larger crowd.

Bungie is very busy. They wanted the groups to be back up and running so we don't get too angry. They will be adding to the groups though.

I hope this is the case. At leased now I have something to look forward to after halo 3.

The best thing to do is just get friends in your group. Get people you KNOW will be active instead of random people, and you'll have a pretty active group with only 20 people.

Although, one has to wonder what the web team were doing on those few months when groups were down...

Yes Art you are correct. Halo 3 is taking up a lot of time for Bungie and in addition managing the websites they have. Businesses that have these sort of sites may or may not make changes often but Bungie is doing the best they can. Would we rather have great looking forum groups or an awesome ending to the Halo series?

  • 07.14.2007 5:36 PM PDT

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

Achronos stated that after Halo 3 has been released, he's going to upgrade some site features and focus more time on it.

It's more logical to let Bungie concentrate on the upcoming Halo 3 release instead of working on their website, which is most likely somewhere at the bottom of their list.

Actually Bungie's web team handles the site, not Bungie themselves.

Just the same, the groups are great in my opinion. Theres a front page news section which I believe is a lot better spamming everyones inbox. Also, I see plenty of groups thriving as things are now. It's all a matter of weather or not your group is good enough or even if it is needed in the community.
