solution A: do not allow a quitter to start another game until the one he left finshes.
solution B: take extra points off for quitting
solution C: incorporate a quit %, which is used for matchmaking to match those who quit a lot with others with the same status, separating quitters from those who finish games.
solution D: wait period after a game is quitted that increases as the person quits more and more games within a time period, which a 24 hour period would be appropriate. this could be like A, but for every game quit after the first one in a 24 hour period, the time that was waited for every game that needed to be finished will be added to each other.
example:
person quits game 1 5 minutes before it ends. total wait time: 5 minutes.
person quits game 2 10 minutes before it ends. total wait time: 15 minutes.
person quits game 10 7 minutes before it ends. total wait time: 22 minutes.
now if you do not like solution D or any of the other solutions, please show me how this would harm those who quit for legit reasons, which would only happen rarely, as opposed to those who quit because they dont like the game or whatever blah, blah, blah. note: connection problems are a reoccuring problem, so either fix it or face the consequences.
i like it. except... as you point out connection problems are a recurring problem. what about those unfortunate to suffer a connection problem? "i didnt want to quit" is a whole seperate catagory from "i have to quit for some important reason" and "i want to quit cause im lame and hate this game" now how do u justify punishing these people. unfortunately its a vicious circle. you cant please anyone... EVER!!
no, choices we make can never please everyone, but if every choice displeases someone, then why move forward? well some action has to be taken, so we have to find the right path that pleases as many people as possible.
i addressed the connection issue a bit ago. if you have to quit for an important reason, by the time you come back from taking care of important buisness and reboot your system, the game would be over and you would experience no wait.
those who quit and do not have an important reason to quit and do not have connection issues make the rest of the players equally frustrated as those who quit for a valid reason or a bad connection, but one thing differs, and that is intentions.
who would you punnish more severely, one who stole a loaf of bread to feed his starving family, or one who stole a loaf of bread because he could?
obviously they both commited the same crime, but with different intentions. both will be punnished, but one more severely than others.
the one who quits because they dont like the game is the same as the one who steals a loaf of bread because he can. therefore his punnishment should be to wait until the game he quit finishes, where the person who quits with a reason might feel some backlash from the wait time, but more than likely will not be able to play until long after the wait time has been lifted.
