Make sure windows firewall has Halo 2 setup to unblock that program. For me, I also had problems first setting up my Live account with Halo 2 when I had XFire running, had to temporarily close XFire, setup Halo 2, and then I could quit the game and use XFire.. try that too.

I'm having the same problem, but I checked the firewall, and it's excepted. I also have no idea what XFire is... Only that you can play Battlefront II with it.

I cant even start the game, the error comes up about 10 seconds after i press play game.... I rang microsoft, was put on2 a technician about it and he told me to go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936688
That didnt work so im now waiting on a call back from some senior technician guy. Its nearly a week now after i bought the game and im seriously considering giving it back. Halo 1 is still fun anyway, and more to the point, has no hassle when playing online.
I think microsoft are trying to dominate the online gaming world too much, their bringing this LIVE thing to pc users which divides players into 3 different classes; gold, silver or basic and its really bringing a downer on just simply the idea of playing a game for fun against random ppl on the net...in my opinion anyway.

I kinda got it to work. What I did was install the Map Editor, and then have it come up. On the top right, it says "Run Halo 2". From There, it worked. Try that. It also showed me how much I need a new computer.

Well not to get as technical about things as urself but lets just say my computer has more than the recommended requirements for the game!
Anyway thats beside the point. I should at least be able to start the game!!

I have the same problem as all you guys, ok first of all the map editor thing WILL WORK IF you go to properties and tell it to run as admin every time. As for the game crashing i called Microsoft and told them about the original error (not the map editor one) and they tried some stuff but nothing worked. HOWEVER we did rename some stuff using command prompt and things like that and when i later tried the map editor way for the heck of it after doing a bunch of crap it worked. I played for over 4 hours but later windows crashed from an unrelated reason and apparently the changes that were made did not save so i once more can't run it XD

marioko did you read my post? Any how to get to the menu (and sometimes into the game) Install the Halo 2 Map Editor. Next right click the halo map editor and click properties. This should open up a new window. Inside the window on the top you should see 5 or so tabs that say "General" "Shortcut" "Compatibility", and other stuff. Click on the compatibility tab. There you should find some options to run it compatibility modes for earlier versions of Windows. Ignore them and go to the Privilege Level on the bottom of the window. There you should have a option to run the program as an administrator. You want this box checked. Next Click apply and close the window. Now open Halo 2 Map Editor and in the top right part of the window you have the option to run Halo 2.

At least now you can get into the main menu. Thats as far as i can go at the moment.

I'm running it on vista. And I found out that every time you close the Halo 2 Map editor and bring it up again, it won't work. YOu have to reinstall it every time you close the map editor or restart your computer. It's a pain, but it works, at least.

I FOUND THE FIX!! After talking with Microsoft for like a total of 5 hours We tried going to the Halo 2 main folder (my computer> Hard drive> Programs > Microsoft games> Halo2 and Made The halo 2 application file run as administrator ALLWAYS (see my other post on exactly step by step on how 2 do that). Now it works great. Anyhow the error is a really stupid administrative rights problem that has occurred with other programs (like skype) on Vista. Hope this helps! :)
