You guys, I mean think about it. Sure 100,000 grand would be nice but to get enough sleep just to play videogames? If it was a sport, people would have heard about MLG..........

People haven't? Generally, something has to be popular to have its own TV show.

Its own TV show (USA Network)
Its own live webcast (www.mlgpro.com)
Local tournaments and thousands of players
Online tournaments and even more players

yeah.....youll hear even more about it in Halo 3 because this thing is still growing.

On the grand scheme of things, MLG does NOT offer anything productive to society, and I could make more than a well-founded argument that it provides completely detrimental aspects to society.

Is the commerce it produces not productive to society? It's doing the exact same thing that all major sports do, just on a lower scale. I'd like to know how you think MLG is detrimental to society.

Yes, but capitalism in and of itself does not make up for the negative aspects of MLG. You compare it to major sports, but it's far different. Actual sports provide people with the opportunity to get an education through college scholarship. Universities like having students that play sports because they offer a different venue and a different type of student for the student population. When's the last time you heard of MLG giving out scholarships rather than cash prizes? They don't. They market people and they market the idea that if you sit behind your t.v. for 8 hours a day and play a video game non-stop you can get an MLG contract. When the chances of doing so is astronomical. However it provides people with the pipe-dream of trying to "go pro" (which I still can't type without laughing) at playing video games. I mean the majority of people who play NCAA sports who basically get paid (through scholarship) to play sports go on to use their education for the betterment of society. MLG doesn't. Until universities start giving away scholarships for people who play MLG, they will still not equal out the negative aspects of it.

And the thing is, with few exceptions (don't even try to use Walshy), the people that are in MLG dedicate the early part of their lives when they could be dedicating that to education. So they might get a couple hundred grand maybe a few years, but the likelihood of long-term economic returns from MLG are slim. As soon as you can't perform to their expectations or they prefer someone else, they'll drop you so fast it will make your head spin. And there people are with no education and nothing to show for the past year or 2 other than "video game" contracts. Trying to parlay that into an actual job is going to be rather difficult. I mean, when I went to college (both times) they had me list my ACT score and my GRE, but as far as I remember my Halo 2 rank was no where to be found on the application. That's because people don't care about video games, and they don't see them as a valid experience or justification of anything.

And don't even get me started on the attitude that is associated with those who follow the MLG mantra. It's been demonstrated on this website countless times, and it's ridiculous. That's not to say that any group doesn't have it's share of ass-clowns but MLG seems to permeate with them. Why do you think that countless thousands HATE MLG? I'm sorry to break this to you, but when is the last time you heard about people hating the PGA or the NBA? It's that type of negative relationship and reputation that leads most people to believe that MLG isn't such a positive thing. And that type of reputation doesn't just happen overnight.

I'm sorry, but when all things are considered, MLG is still more of a blight on society than a benefit. You can try to justify it with all the economics you want, but it still doesn't tip the scales in their favor.

I think a 250,000 dollar contract over 3 years because youre a talented MLg player is funding enough to go to college. Besides, you are completely misinformed if you think that MLG players dont go to college. There are several of the top guys in college. The rest arent old enough yet.
As far as your comment on people hating on MLG players because of their attitudes, id tend to agree. There are alot of "ass-clowns" out there, especially in MLG, however, you have to realize that in the NBA, MLB and NFL all of the players are adults. With MLG there are mostly young teenagers who dont have the mental maturity to handle themselves. They finally found out that they are good at something and want to talk their crap....they probobally get beat up at school every day and this is their revenge. Most of the pros that are on the top teams are different though. Most of those guys just seem like -blam!-s because they have to sort of isolate themselves from the general MLG population because these fanboys wont stop tracking them down all over the place so they can associate with pros.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

At MLG Vegas Championships last season, Gandi took part in a $2000.00 dollar match where his winnings went to Hurricane Katrina victims.

And why waste time playing a tournament when MLG could have just donated the money right away?

Oh yeah thats right, they just capitlized on a tragedy to make a profit and promote themselves to the public.

Why should they? Why not promote yourself a little bit before you donate. Businesses are all about money and wont donate or do anything if they cant turn a profit or write it off on their taxes. You may think its sad but in life nothing is free and nothing is "given".

Universities and education have nothing to do with this topic. And besides, colleges only give out scholarships so they can recruit the star players and fill their stadiums (this is debatable and off topic).

We're comparing MLG to sports leagues/associations and sports in general. Are you saying that you're against letting people out of highschool into professional leagues (eg. Kobe, Kevin Ganett)? I think if they can make the money now, they can still get the education later. Players in any kind of sport can and will diminish in skill. Don't even try to act like you care about these people. Poor guys, now what are they gonna do? Maybe the pro MLG players will be able to garnish nice positions within the MLG offices or since they're that into games, they can learn about and get into game developent. Whatever they want, they can still go for later.

Regarding the attitudes, you're right. But have you seen the Bengals and Titans lately? I just don't see any of the MLG pros facing jail time right now. I could be wrong, though.

What are you Talking about!? The only athletic thing that your doing is your fingers!!

How does a video game not fall under the definition of athlete?

Why are you looking at it that way? The money gets donated anyway regardless of who wins or loses. They're just "playing" for it because it's a part of MLG to have something you're playing for. And the players didn't have to do it, nor did MLG. It wasn't even a well known charity event at all- only highlighted in one of their Vidocs.

Why look at it like that when NBA players donated $1000 for every slam dunk they made? People donated money all the time with their company name on it, I mean every major star who donated had something they were "promoting," even if they weren't directly promoting it.

They only donated the money given to the winner, thats not raising money at all.

BS you obviously know nothing about charity. Charity events are one of the biggest sources of revenue for NPO's. Events get people involved and motivated about there cause heck there also kind of fun.

No, they donated money to all 4 charities, not just the winners.

It was Gandi, Tsquared, Foulacy, and ....that's all I can remember. But the point was they weren't playing for "recognition" or "promotion." They were playing to raise awareness, get involved with what they could, and help with whatever they can.

I really don't understand why you guys look at MLG as bad people. They're just professional gamers..............

I really just think people should let other people play the game they want without question(excluding modders and cheaters). Some people take it more seriously than other people because they are really good at the game. Good players can possibly get paid to play the game so they take it serious, as they should.

As for being an athlete; Takes physical strength to push buttons, agility for pushing them fast enough and stamina for playing non stop at a tournament. Just my smart-ass remark.

I'd much rather be signed onto a 1mil dollar contract for over 3-4yrs(I think it's that long) just to play a video game then work in an office making $60k+ a year if I'm lucky. Especially since gaming is something I enjoy, ALOT!

I don't even think DDR takes physical strength just stamina. I don't see how I can call myself an athlete just because I play video games.
