Physical power? When did physical power become a requirement for sports, or athletes. Kevin Durant can't even bench 185, meaning he severely lacks in physical power, but his finess skills and height make him a great basketball player. Being able to outthink, out play, outstrafe, out aim, make clutch plays, communicate, and outprepare your opponents are all skill based aspects of Halo.

Yes, these are skills. But sewing and knitting are also skills. Painting is a skill, requiring finesse, and quite a bit of manual dexterity. Hell, opera requires a lot of muscular control, and bodily discipline. Yet, these are not sports. I surmise that the line cannot be easily defined. I don't think billiards is a sport, it's a game. Bowling and golf are both games in my mind, not true sports. Perhaps the line should be drawn to include those three however. What I can tell you is that if playing a video game makes one an athlete, then the line has become meaningless. If you don't implicitly understand this concept as an intuitive matter, then there's really nothing I or anyone else can do for you. :/

Yes billiards, bowling, golf, and video games are all designed for having a good time and or our enjoyment but if you want to take it to the next level and compete for money and such then all those things become competitive sports.

I mean, I hate to tell ya but if you havent seen the irls at some of these events you need to. They all play competetively and there are several of them that are absolutely gorgeous.

I second that. Find Team Xrated... there all pretty good and a really hot.... and there coach....omg....

Anyway, like Kevin said: Most of us are not going to go up to a girl and be like... "I play halo competitively and I travel around the country to compete in a professional gaming league called MLG".... I mean if I was in a actual relationship then I would explain it what it is and everything but you guys get the point.

Also, like Kevin said, most girls dont give a flying -blam!- if you play halo... unless they really are like 13-14

But yeah I've heard he can be a jerk sometimes as well.....

Still can't believe Pistola won LOL. I mean he's really good but I was watching the VoD of his championship win and.......if it wasn't for someone killing a guy on P2 who was about to kill Pistola, he wouldn't have got that clutch double kill for the win. Still though, he's a beast!

Yes, but capitalism in and of itself does not make up for the negative aspects of MLG. You compare it to major sports, but it's far different. Actual sports provide people with the opportunity to get an education through college scholarship. Universities like having students that play sports because they offer a different venue and a different type of student for the student population. When's the last time you heard of MLG giving out scholarships rather than cash prizes? They don't. They market people and they market the idea that if you sit behind your t.v. for 8 hours a day and play a video game non-stop you can get an MLG contract. When the chances of doing so is astronomical. However it provides people with the pipe-dream of trying to "go pro" (which I still can't type without laughing) at playing video games. I mean the majority of people who play NCAA sports who basically get paid (through scholarship) to play sports go on to use their education for the betterment of society. MLG doesn't. Until universities start giving away scholarships for people who play MLG, they will still not equal out the negative aspects of it.

And the thing is, with few exceptions (don't even try to use Walshy), the people that are in MLG dedicate the early part of their lives when they could be dedicating that to education. So they might get a couple hundred grand maybe a few years, but the likelihood of long-term economic returns from MLG are slim. As soon as you can't perform to their expectations or they prefer someone else, they'll drop you so fast it will make your head spin. And there people are with no education and nothing to show for the past year or 2 other than "video game" contracts. Trying to parlay that into an actual job is going to be rather difficult. I mean, when I went to college (both times) they had me list my ACT score and my GRE, but as far as I remember my Halo 2 rank was no where to be found on the application. That's because people don't care about video games, and they don't see them as a valid experience or justification of anything.

And don't even get me started on the attitude that is associated with those who follow the MLG mantra. It's been demonstrated on this website countless times, and it's ridiculous. That's not to say that any group doesn't have it's share of ass-clowns but MLG seems to permeate with them. Why do you think that countless thousands HATE MLG? I'm sorry to break this to you, but when is the last time you heard about people hating the PGA or the NBA? It's that type of negative relationship and reputation that leads most people to believe that MLG isn't such a positive thing. And that type of reputation doesn't just happen overnight.

I'm sorry, but when all things are considered, MLG is still more of a blight on society than a benefit. You can try to justify it with all the economics you want, but it still doesn't tip the scales in their favor.

~B.B.

It sounds like someone needs his pacifier. Did the MLG touch you in a bad place?

Seriously, why the hell are you so up the ass of the MLG? There are plenty of other things in the world for you to be angry about, if these guys want to pay kids to play video games, good for them.

Nice ad hominem...now as soon as you can talk like a grown-up, re-read that other guy's argument. The fact that MLG pays people or provides jobs for people is not the point. It's the people along the way that get screwed over. I mean if you are good at basketball, but just not enough to "go pro" at least you can go through college on a basketball scholarship and get a good education. MLG doesn't have that positive aspect. That was the point of that argument, apparently your feeble mind missed it.

He may have missed the point, but I sure as hell didnt. Let me ask you a question. Did the MLB give out scholarships in the mid to late 1800's when it was still in its infancy? What about the NFL or NBA? The answer is NO, it didnt. The reason for that is just because its a new sport in its infancy. As with all the others itll take a while for everyone to quit talking crap about how they dont think its a sport. After a while, when the sport has grown to a much larger scale then they may be able to offer scholarships or other benefits.

Im sure that 100 years ago, people watching a few guys hitting a ball around on a field developing a new game started to laugh at it until it finally caught on and grew into the MLB that we see today. You cant see the future and neither can I. MLG is just as likely to die out in a few years, but until then close your ass because youre talking out of it way too much.

Honestly, I play MLG (FFA's only, I'm not a good team person) and I don't need to warm up. Quite frankly I am at my best when I first log on, or when I haven't played in a few days, and then I sort of cool off as I continue.

Nope, you still missed the point, but thanks for playing. And what is it with you people and ad hominems? Are you completely incapable of making any sort of argument? Here is the POINT, and apparently I have to explain it to you people because I seem able to comprehend whereas you cannot. The major sports are different because even if people are good in sports but not to the point of a "professional" status, they can still use those skills to acquire a college scholarship and get an education. THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO UNIVERSITIES THAT AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS BASED UPON VIDEO GAME PERFORMANCE! That's how it's different.

Oh, and since you just admitted that you cannot see the future, TRY TO NOT USE THAT AS A PATHETIC ARGUMENT! Look, Brock, if you're going to just keep making sad fallacies, why even bother posting?

You do use energy to fish, and also need muscle to pull in a big one. It is athletic, in my own opinion.

Angry much? So what if you can't get a scholarship from it? Seems to be off topic.

The only reason why I would be angry is because there are some people on this forum, and not mentioning who, who are apparently incapable of understanding simple arguments. Which I was attempting to compensate for by using capital letters. So if they didn't read the entirety of my post, and only read the capitalized portion, maybe then they would understand.

And how is it off-topic? That's a crucial (IMO) part of why soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, fencing, football even are all legitimate "sports". However, video games, not so much. You can try to claim video games as a sport, but in reality you're in the same boat as trying to claim that extreme dodgeball is a sport. It does not have the additional things that add to the "legitimacy" of the so-called sport.

Scholarships do not make the sport what it is. Would you not call ultimate frisbee a sport? It certainly takes athleticism if you're playing seriously. I would call that sport. It's just different and not popular.

No, I would not consider ultimate frisbee a legitimate sport. Although the ability to "drink a disk" (3 beers 12 oz beers BTW) does seem to have *some* athletic nature to it. And you were correct about one thing: scholarships do not inherently "make" the sport, but they do make the sport more legitimate. Which is why I and probably the majority of the general public will never see playing video games as a legitimate sport.

Now, if you want to argue semantics, go for it. But there really is no point.

You didn't notice the other about 20 times I used the word "legitimate" in the variety of other posts I made? Or even the fact that I put the word "legitimate" in parenthesis? And, I'm quite aware that the word "legitimate" is a relative term...as demonstrated by the sentence, "Judging from your responses, you must be the half-retarded illegitimate child of a monkey and a rock". See, in that sentence the word (il)legitimate goes to define the status of your biological parents at the time of your conception and subsequent birth.

But like I said, semantics really aren't worth arguing over. However, as soon as someone can give me several "valid" reasons why video games should be considered a "legitimate" sport, maybe they would be worth arguing over.

LOL. You need muscle to deep sea fish, and that's it. A majority of proffessional fishing in bass fishing, and that doesn't require athelticism. Its not hard to have enough muscle to pull ina bass. So are you saying deep sea fishing is a sport, while bass fishing isn't?
