Dictionary.com's #1 listing for "sport."

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

It did say an athletic activity, did it not?

Dictionary.com's third definition for sport.

diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

I think video gaming falls under that, don't you?

the first definition has no superiority over the third.

Don't get cocky now!

wow, this argument is still going on...

Anyways, I think those "Pro MLG" players will have to change "careers" sometime within the next few years (i.e. flipping burgers at McDonalds) after Microsoft and it's horde of lawyers shut down MLG for using XBOX to make money.

Then again, if MLG is already in the clear and/or owned by Micro$oft, then ignore what i just posted.

If Microsoft didn't approve of it, there wouldn't be any MLG at all today. There's so much advertisement for the 360 it's ridiculous. Plus, the target ages involoved.........MLG is a goldmine for Microsoft to make some easy money.

I'm sure that after they're done with gaming, they'll have something set up for their future. Walshy has his clotheline, Karma is going into video game design.....the Ogres are in college (studying who knows what.) Everyone else who plays MLG is also in school (with the exception of a few people, but that's understandable.)

However, I too am surprised this debate is still going, LOL. I swear it's 15 pages of us saying the same stuff over and over.

Because its an open forum dumbass.

Oh, very true, but I'm curious as why you would go to such great lengths to prove that you have the intellect of a retarded monkey? "Better to be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove any doubt"...apparently doesn't apply to you, eh?

Dude you need to chill out. Notice how the only people getting "upset" in this thread are those against MLG and whatnot. Notice how you guys frequently type in all caps on and off, and stoop to tactless flaming.

Chill. Either debate intelligently or don't debate at all.

@ Orgasmic LOL mini-beats :-D

Why would I debate them intelligently if they cannot respond in kind? And I do believe that people started with the insults at me first Iceman, so I began talking to them on the level they apparently wanted to operate at. But...I do not see you chastising them for their "tactless flaming", so if I didn't know better that would suggest to me that you were being hypocritical. But the great IcemanAssassin, hero of the forums would never do something hypocritical...or at least he wouldn't have a year and a half ago before he got involved with the more "competitive" gamers. Hmm...I guess times have changed.

And really...you seriously think that the only people getting upset in this thread are the ones degrading MLG? Re-read a variety of Brock's posts...and then try to make that statement.

Unless you are also BerserkerBarage, you insulted someone before anyone insulted you.

"Nice ad hominem...now as soon as you can talk like a grown-up, re-read that other guy's argument. The fact that MLG pays people or provides jobs for people is not the point. It's the people along the way that get screwed over. I mean if you are good at basketball, but just not enough to "go pro" at least you can go through college on a basketball scholarship and get a good education. MLG doesn't have that positive aspect. That was the point of that argument, apparently your feeble mind missed it."

He just told you to chill out, and you suddenly take shots at him. Your maturity shows. I'm not saying Brock's posts were mature at all either, but don't act innocent at all.

BTW, Iceman telling oyu to chill out, and not Brock, is not hypocritical. maybe selective, or unfair, but not hypocritical. Hypocritical would be telling you to not flame, and then going and flaming himself, or supporting flaming in this thread, he's done neither. Just because he said something to you, and not EVERYONE, doesn't mean you should go around and take shots at him, while he's done nothing offensive to you at all.

No...being hypocritical is not solely based upon telling someone to something and then doing it yourself. That's part of it. The part where Iceman is being hypocritical is that he is criticizing me for "tactless flaming" which demonstrates he's making a moral argument. However, since he is not applying that moral argument adequately across the board to all people, it is because of his selective comment to me, that he's being hypocritical.

Now, if he would have told me specifically to "chill out" and then made a general statement to everyone else, it wouldn't have been an issue. Not like any of this matters.

The point that I'll reiterate is that video games/MLG is not a legitimate sport. Neither is extreme dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, badminton, or golf (ok, that's a joke). As has been said before, there are other groups in the Halo community that do a lot of the same positive things that MLG does, but they don't have any of the negative. I mean, when is the last time you saw someone on the forums complaining about Real Custom Games (RCG)?

No, there is nothign saying he isn't applying that moral argument everywhere. If he would have said Brock's flaming was okay, but yours was bad, then that would be being a hypocrite. But he never condoned ANYONE flaming. Just because he didn't point out everyone, doesn't make him a hypocrite. You gopt the word right, selective, he singled you out, but he never said anyone else flaming was okay.

I would still ahve to disagree, although halo players aren't athletes, at the competitive level, I see gaming as a recreational sport equivalent to bass fishing.

Care to explain how Dodgeball and Ultimate Frisbee arent sports? They are very physical and meet all of the requirements for a sport with ease.

I would define both of those really as just recreation rather than a sport. And that goes back to Pandemic's point also. Really, this is merely just an argument against semantics, but I see things such as dodgeball, frisbee, video games (on the level that MLG takes it to) as recreation, not really sports. Granted, if they can get Halo 3 on the Olympic listings, I'd probably have to reevaluate my opinion. Until then, it is such, my opinion and I've given my reasoning behind it.

But see, Ultimate Frisbee and dodgeball (and similar games) require stamina and lots of physical exertion and are often played in leagues and tournaments worth money...just like any other big name "sports" so they deserve to be titled a sport.

I dont mind calling MLG a sport, but athlete is pushing it.

Yes, I'll agree that there was flaming on both sides. I suppose the "Retarded Monkey" comment struck out more. As FK said, I was being selective and unfair, so I'll take this time to say Sorry for calling you out like that.

But the great IcemanAssassin, hero of the forums would never do something hypocritical...or at least he wouldn't have a year and a half ago before he got involved with the more "competitive" gamers. Hmm...I guess times have changed.

Hero? LOL hardly. This is an online forum, not an RPG. The fact that I don't attempt to push my opinions down peoples' throats, and I don't flame doesn't make me a "hero" at all.

And you're right, times have changed. I used to be one of those players who thought people above 40 weren't legit, and that MLG players aren't good. Boy was I wrong. Wanna know why? Because I didn't understand. I didn't play with them, didn't attempt to learn their style and community. I was just another person who ran around making senseless claims about people I didn't understand.

However, after playing with these people and understanding what type of games they play, I can see more clearly from their perspective. So now I won't go about making posts that don't add up (like the majority of the posts in these types of threads.)

And really...you seriously think that the only people getting upset in this thread are the ones degrading MLG? Re-read a variety of Brock's posts...and then try to make that statement.

Yes, Kevin did lose his cool a bit back there. I know he can debate intelligently. I won't speak for him, but I'd imagine all this is a result of everyone arguing back and forth and nothing getting done. Same old, same old.

Not trying to say to stop the arguing, just pointing out that we're hardly getting anywhere. Deciever, FK's, and Sketto's posts yesterday (or the day before, I can't remember) had me thinking that we could finally draw a conclusion to the debate, but it's right back to square one every time.

Football, Baseball, basketball, mainstream sports etc=Athletic Sports

Gaming, Fishing, Bowling, etc=Recreational Sports.

I still strongly believe that this could be the compromise that could end this discussion..

Normally I've seen alot of people who think H2 is more of a sport. ( I Havent against pro's ) But some say, they need alot of rest. Or They need something to eat before a big game?. Or a warm up game. Now, the warm up game said That he needed a warm up before he started a Team Hardcore Game, and he was winning by 10 kills. I just think that people get a little serious about playing a Videogame. I do believe that Pro Circuits are important to a whole bunch of people but, I think there going to far......... What do you think?
