Whoa, whoa, whoa. Video gaming, automobile racing, hell, even skateboarding - these are NOT sports. I skate, as well. Skaters are known for saying that skating is a sport. It isn't. A sport is an activity that is CENTERED around physical exertion, and that is meant to be competitive. Let's compare -
FOOTBALL -
Physical, and designed to be competitive. Sport.
RACING -
Hell no. Not centered around physical exertion. I don't care how much they sweat, or whatever. I even have props for racing - its by no means easy and it requires a lot of knowledge. Strategy and know-how are key, though, not dexterity/strength. Once again, citing the use of reflexes for means by which to identify this competitive activity as a sport is BS.
SKATEBOARDING -
Requires amazing amounts of physical coordination. But, it is not designed to be competitive. Meaning, there is no concrete way in which to evaluate one's performance (as in a footrace, where there is time kept, or in football, where point awarding is rigidly defined). I love to skate, but since most of my skating time is spent with friends, goofing off in parking lots, this does not qualify as a sport
VIDEO GAMES -
Not centered around physical exertion. I really hope someone disagrees with this so I can point and laugh. Yes, reflexes ARE physical, but other elements of gameplay far overshadow this. Plus, calling "tapping the melee button when someone drops down in front of you all of a sudden" an act of physical strength or dexterity is pure BS.
Video games, though, ARE competitive. I'll give you that. A video game is a non-physical competitive activity, making it fall under the same category as, say chess. A delightfully fun activity/hobby, but not a sport.
I know I'm not really on topic here, but it just irks me when people try to be all "technical" and "clever" and use dictionary.com as a major source of info. I don't care what some nerdy dude classifys a sport as - we all know that sitting and pressing trigger buttons on a controller is not a sport (though it is quite fun, and can be highly competitive/challenging)
