Dont even respond if you are under 17 years of age, you lack the intellectual capacity to participate in an argument with any credibility.

Oh so now I lack the intellectual capacity to participate in a intelligent debate? Says the person who is fighting an argument that he clearly doesn't have any experience in the subject of what he is arguing about.

Please do not bring my age into the argument. I assure I am more than capable of having a intelligent debate.

Like I said earlier, you have never experienced it. Therefor, please do not post like you have, when you clearly have not.

Except this is a dicussion of opinion, therefor 'experiance' is negated. So based on your logic, since nobody here is an MLG gamer, none of us can have this discussion?

Yes and No. Im pretty sure everybody here besides you agrees that halo is mentally demanding. MLG really has nothing to do with what I was saying. I was using it as an example.

And it's a good example. Unfortunately, people can't seem to realize that there ARE people making a living from this game, and it DOES take demanding work to be good at it.

Honestly, I'm beginning to think people are knocking it because they're jealous of the fact that there are those with so much talent at this game that they get paid a quarter million to compete.

It's either that or utter ignorance. I'm thinking both.

Anyway, until you go to an event (like Orgasmic has) and experience what it's like to have people cheering for/against you, you won't know what the pros have to deal with.

Ok, look. It's a video game, sure. It's designed for fun and chilling and winding down and whatnot. But people have come to the point where their skills in this game supercede others' by a large margin. And that's why they can attempt to go on and make money from this game.

They're getting paid. Which means they're NOT sitting on down playing video games when they please. They have to balance this with other things, and take it very seriously to stay ahead of the competition.

Walshy has his own clothing line. A clothing line for crying out loud, and he's still balancing that with Halo 2 to stay ahead of the pack.

Bottom line- stop speaking with ignorance when you're just watching from the sidelines and thinking "Those nerds have no lives." Because they DO have lives, and just happen to get paid doing something they truely enjoy.

So quit being jealous guys, or ignorant. Whichever comes first.

If you do not play MLG competetively then you will never know what these people go through on an everyday basis. Have you ever had a sport or hobby that you enjoyed so much that you wished you could make money at it? Did you ever have a dream about doing something competetively, at a large event with thousands of people cheering for/against you? Thats what MLG is about. Its not the money so much as it is the desire to prove yourself and test yourself against the world's best. Ive played tons of sports in my life and ive never felt the rush like I have when im playing in a furious MLG game.

These kids work extremely hard to get to where they are today, why try to bash on them for doing something that they love and want to do? At least they arent in gangs or selling drugs (some of them). The average high level MLG player probobally practices and plays 6-8 hours a day with the occasional break. When they practice, they arent playing zombies or cat-n-mouse, they are studying strategies and developing their teamwork. They study each and every square inch of every MLG map and learn to use the terrain to their advantage. Not only that, but they also learn something more important than all of that....TEAMWORK.

Ive coached many.....many players. Ive seen tons of them fail because they just thought they had what it took to be among the top tier of players but a few of them actually have that fire and drive to succeed. These guys and girls that go to the events and practice all those long, stressful and grueling hours will eventually get paid for their work and until you put your time, dedication and heart into MLG youd never understand. Its not even so much about the events, some of them just want to be among the best online so please dont bash on them just because they are working their asses off and you take it as a joke....youre the freaking joke.

Video games are not sports or anything that has to do with athletics. Its an insult to true athletes to call playing Halo 2 a sport. Real athletes go through intense physical training and pain. Not to mention the mental toughness that has to go along with it. Dont tell me playing video games requires mental toughness either... the hardest it gets is: "Oh I lost this round.. ill just have to try better and practice!"

You might as well call watching TV a sport... Lets condone laziness and pamper society some more.

Please, if Nascar is a sport then so is Halo.

I completely agree with Critical (god help me). Read my above post if you still arent clear on exactly what it takes to be an MLG player. It does take mental toughness and ill guarantee you that its more mentally stressful than any sport that youve played. Golf is a sport, how many golfers do you see sweating? Golf is a mental game with some physical activity. Nascar was mentioned earlier. It takes skill and money to be good at Nascar but how many pot-bellied drivers are there out there? Want some more examples of sports that take very little physical activity but take tons of hand-eye coordination and mental toughness?

Nascar
Golf
Bowling
Poker
Professional shooting

So basically youre saying that if Doyle Brunson looses at the last table of the WPC then he is just gonna get up, shrug his shoulders at the million dollars on the table and say "I guess ill just have to try next time"? Ive got news for ya, just beause it dosent take physical strength to play dosent make it any less of a sport. Some sports require more hand-eye coordination and mental prowess than actual physical ability. All the poeple that play the above sports would slap the -blam!- out of you right now if they read this.....go tell Gilbet Arenas that MLG isnt a sport.

Once again, this is a discussion about it being a sport or not, people get paid a quarter million to eat hot dogs... see Kobayashi. People get paid to do almost anything. No, I'm not jealous... I make more money in real estate and consulting.

It's either that or utter ignorance. I'm thinking both.

Nobody is being jealous or ignorant. Nobody said "those nerds have no lives".. and if they did.. once again.. quote it please?

Simply put, quit changing the discussion / topic. MLG gamers are NOT athletes and MLG is NOT a sport. How hard is it to stick to this topic? you guys are terrible debaters.

I'd like to see a poker player try to slap the -blam!- out of me if I said that to them... All of the others I said are sports anyway. Gaming and poker are activities. Sports have athletes. Sometimes MLG players ARE athletes outside of just playing games.. and I never called any of them nerds with no lives. I just would never put MLG on the same pedestal of things like NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, PGA etc etc... sports in which people have trained THEIR ENTIRE LIVES. Which MLG player has been playing Halo 2 since they were 8? none. (unless of course there is an MLG player who is 10 years old.)

It does really matter what you think about how serious people take halo 2.

As long as there's an audience for something and people pay money for it then it's a way to earn cash. And when there's a chance to get cash it's going to get competitive. There are so many celebrities today who do virtually nothing to earn what they have - that's something you can really worry about.

Perhaps you might also want to consider that some people enjoy getting better at halo 2. :O

By defintion, competitive gaming is a sport.

Sport:an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Well, gaming requires skill, you must be physically(and mentally) better than your opponents, and I'm pretty sure MLG makes it have "competitive nature". The fact that they aren't physically massive, or that they haven't trained their entire lives, has nothing to do with it. If fishing is a sport, video games can be too.

BTW, golfers are in great shape? LOL. Yeah, some are, but see the likes of John Daly, Phil Mickelson, or Craig Stadler.

I bet Phil Mickelson is in better conditioning and has more strength than you think. And is a fisherman considered an athlete? doubt it.

So by your definition, anything that requires 'skill' is a sport now? I could have a field day with that argument.

Actually, I do know EXACTLY what im talking about. I ran track and CC and played baseball in High school. I used to wake up at 5 every morning and run 8 miles with my CC team and then go to track practice after school with Baseball in between. All the while, I was making A's and B's in school. Ive ran in the ice and rain until I couldnt stand anymore and it was so cold that I couldnt breathe. I know exactly what a sport is. so yes, MLG is a sport.

sport /spɔrt, spoʊrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
4. jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously.
5. mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him.
6. an object of derision; laughingstock.
7. something treated lightly or tossed about like a plaything.
8. something or someone subject to the whims or vicissitudes of fate, circumstances, etc.
9. a sportsman.
10. Informal. a person who behaves in a sportsmanlike, fair, or admirable manner; an accommodating person: He was a sport and took his defeat well.
11. Informal. a person who is interested in sports as an occasion for gambling; gambler.
12. Informal. a flashy person; one who wears showy clothes, affects smart manners, pursues pleasurable pastimes, or the like; a bon vivant.
13. Biology. an organism or part that shows an unusual or singular deviation from the normal or parent type; mutation.
14. Obsolete. amorous dalliance.

As taken from www.dictionary.com's definition of the word SPORT. Read Definition 1, 2 and 3.
"an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." Id say that playing MLG takes "physical prowess", "skill" and is of a "competetive nature". Notice also that Bowling, Golf, Hunting and Fishing were all involved in this. Guess what? Theyre sports. Just because professional video gaming is new dosent make it any less of a sport.

Like I said earlier, some of these kids practice as many hours as any other athlete, just because its more of a mental game than physical dosent diminish the amount of skill required to compete at this level.

I also noticed that you brought up " Which MLG player has been playing Halo 2 since they were 8? none. (unless of course there is an MLG player who is 10 years old". And the answer is.......Lil Poison! Now on to the Bonus round.

Just because these kids are young and dont have alot of life expirence dosent mean that they dont have drive, desire, dedication and discipline.

Have you watched Nascar lately? Those guys arent exactly 200 lbs.

I guess you can technically call these players athletes (participants in a sport or game that requires physical skill) because when you boil it down, you have to have the "physical skill" in your hands and fingers to manipulate the controller. Since some people consider bowling and golf a sport (not me), then it's possible to consider video gaming a sport and the players athletes.

I don't agree with calling them athletes (nor golfers, drivers, bowlers, horseshoe tossers, dart throwers, poker players, etc.), but that's just me.

I think someone mentioned that they consider Starcraft a sport in some of those asian countries.

Now that I think that we can all pretty much agree that its a sport, back on topic. Most all MLG players require warm up games to get their focus, hand-eye coordination down and to get their fingers loosened for the game. Like in baseball, some pitchers can warm up in about 10-15 pitches and some it takes more like 30-35. I usually take about 5 or 6 games to get completely in the zone and some people can play 1 FFA and be ready. Its all about how your body responds.
