playing H2 is hard work? please. ID PAY YOU GUYS if halo 2 was my job. Anyone who has a full time job can back me up, playing H2 at a high level IS NOT WORK.
And why not? What consistitutes work? Oh yeah, preparing for something, dedicating time and effort into it, and above all being paid for it.
Do you think MLG just hands contracts to anyone who can 4 shot all the time? No. They give contracts to people that have shown the skill, talent, and determination necessary to deserve one, then they expect them to perform at that level consistently.
I've been working at a contract agency for the past 3 years. 40 hours a week, semi-long commute, yadda yadda. So yeah, I know what work is about. It's about getting up and preparing yourself for the task at hand.
If preparing yourself for Halo 2 tournaments so you can get paid isn't work, then you need to rethink the definition a bit.
did these guys pay $20k / year to get a degree? NO
Who said you need a college degree to get a job? Most lower skilled jobs require a high school diploma or GED. Bringing college into the question is irrelevant.
Did these guys have to ace college level programs? NO
Again, it's irrelevant. I can be a trash truck driver and not care jack about college. It's still a job.
Do they work everyday 9-5, 200 days per year? NO
Neither do stockbrokers, they work at extraneous hours. Same with cops and lawyers who are self employed. Setting hours on a work schedule does not consistute if it's a job.
Oh, and for the record, Walshy works 40+ hours a week, and still balances with his practice time.
Do they do ANY kind of physical labor? (think construction workers) NO.
ANY? Yes, thumbs. They hurt after a while LOL.
And if any of you idolize these guys...you might want to re-think your life.
Who said anything about idolizing? Yeah, I'm a gamer, so I find this stuff cool, but I see them as just people who have above average talent and are trying to make some money off of it.
Why is it so hard to give respect to someone who works hard for their money? Again, StrongSide getting his $250,000 contract will be my example. He worked hard day after day to get to where he is. Why is it so much different than an actor who memorizes thousands of lines so he gets chosen for a movie role? Or a doctor spending all his time learning medical procedures for his patients?
I use real world examples because what these guys do is now part of the real world. It's a different kind of job- professional gaming. Again, it's not like they're sitting down doing nothing and playing when they feel like it. And they don't necessarily go to these tournaments for fun. Because in order to stay on top, you need to take yourself seriously for the moment at hand, and have fun when it's over. That's why what they do is their job.
Plus, you should at least get to know who you're talking about before making assumptions on them. Most of the people in question have well educated backgrounds (in college/high school) and work very hard on the side to do what they do.
