pressing the R trigger and moving a joystick around does not involve any skill whatsoever.

Um, yeah it does. Do you even know what skill is?

I think it's pathetic that we as a society, deem it completely warranted to give someone a quarter million dollars for throwing a ball around a field or slapping a puck into a net. Yes, it's entertaining, but these people don't deserve to get paid out the ass while others with real jobs struggle to get by. I think it's even more sad that this has extended itself to video games; it's not even the developers that work tirelessly to produce an incredibly complicated and detailed form of entertainment that are getting paid a metric -blam!-ton of money... it's people who buy it and play it.

It's called talent. T-A-L-E-N-T.

If you have above average speed and strength and endurance, would you not attempt to play football or track or some other professional sport? Please. You're making it sound like people get paid just to throw around footballs and entertain us. Sure, that IS what they're doing, but at what cost?

Lemme break it down for you. Playing football professionally is what these peoples' LIVES are about. They spend their youth keeping in shape, and getting recognition. Then they enter the draft, and work EVERY DAY to stay in shape. On top that, memorize hundreds of plays and calls, and survive training camp. You mention "Real jobs." Well I consider working out to the point of exhaustion in 90 degree heat every day for all of summer a REAL JOB. Then going out and performing in the fall to make the playoffs. THAT is why they get paid so much money.

Do you know what this? It's called AMBITION. It's called DETERMINATION. If someone is going to dedicate so much time and energy and effort into being that good for something they love, then by damn I consider that a REAL JOB.

The same goes for MLG Pros. They love this game so much that they're willing to travel the country and dedicate time to practice. All for the sake of being prepared to face the best. THAT is why StrongSide is getting paid $250,000 to play Halo 2. He's not just sitting on his ass playing games. He's doing WORK.

Why is this so hard to understand?

MLG woops ass and is the way the game competitively should be played. And yeah it is work its very hard work. I know it is. I practice really damn hard at it everyday, just like many other MLG players.Have you ever tried to play at very high competitive levels, i doubt you have considering your outlook on the subject. You go ask any of the top players like Walshy and Karma what there average day is like. Dont insult MLG players either, no hot girl wants to hang out with an MLG player, yeah right, which is why most of the top players are in great shape and have girlfriends, did you just assume these things about MLG players or did you just think about teens/young adults playing video games all the time. Go research about the players and how there livelyhood is.

I'd say that you couldn't call it a sport because it actually decreases the well being of your body. Yeah thats what sport is all about sitting on a couch all day getting carpel tunnel and live false lives on the internet. Sport is about strategy and all that too, but I think it should be towards the well being of your body.

that group of "elite" gamers shows for a small group of the community. I know a lot of people online who would rather play mlg than make friends.

i dont see why people dont consider it a sport...i mean videos games require you to have incredible reflexes just like any sport, just because we art running around like wild animals doesnt mean its not a sport. from an aethletic point of view maybe not but the mental part is the same. i mean golf isnt exactly the most physcal thing in the world but its still a sport right?
and kids that play a few hours a day of halo is just the same as a kid that goes outsiede and plays a game of basketball. they are not just gonna go out there and jump directly into a game. they are going to take a few shots and get there aim and feel for the ball back before playing a serious game.

yes they may, but they dont NEED to. if they want to get fat they can, and it wont affect them. so stating that most are in good shape is irrelevent.

Lets conduct a field study.

Kid A: plays 4 hours of halo per day
Kid B: Plays 4 hours of basketball per day

then compare the following:
1. social well-being
2. physical well-being
3. mental well-being
4. outlook on life in general
5. health characteristics

who wins? See I think this is why our nation is becomming fatter and lazier every generation that passes. playing H2 is hard work? please. ID PAY YOU GUYS if halo 2 was my job. Anyone who has a full time job can back me up, playing H2 at a high level IS NOT WORK.

did these guys pay $20k / year to get a degree? NO
Did these guys have to ace college level programs? NO
Do they work everyday 9-5, 200 days per year? NO
Do they do ANY kind of physical labor? (think construction workers) NO.

And if any of you idolize these guys...you might want to re-think your life.

uhh because video games are not work. as much as you want to call it work, it isnt.

just say some hot girl asks you, "hey, you wanna go to the movies tomorrow?" and an MLG nerd says "im sorry, i cant. I got work" she says, "oh really? what do you do?" "video games" *SLAP* (actually i doubt any hot girl would want to hang out with an MLG nerd)

but my point is, you cant tell someone you have to "work" when all your doin is playing video games... it isnt right, its just not right...

If a kid had the balls to go up to a hot girl and use his Halo skills as a pickup line... props to him. I mean, that's sad on an unheard of level, but Christ, you've got to have some stones to do that.

Let's see...MLG players get paid a lot of money for doing a mindless activity that takes practice and no brain activity...

What other "profession" fits that criteria?

HOOKERS!!

Yep, you heard it here first...MLG = Hookers!!

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Exactly, I agree 100%

Alot of these MLG players would cry if they went to my work and did dishes for over 6 hours on a mid-summer saturday night... they wouldn't last.

And why not? What consistitutes work? Oh yeah, preparing for something, dedicating time and effort into it, and above all being paid for it.

Do you think MLG just hands contracts to anyone who can 4 shot all the time? No. They give contracts to people that have shown the skill, talent, and determination necessary to deserve one, then they expect them to perform at that level consistently.

I've been working at a contract agency for the past 3 years. 40 hours a week, semi-long commute, yadda yadda. So yeah, I know what work is about. It's about getting up and preparing yourself for the task at hand.

If preparing yourself for Halo 2 tournaments so you can get paid isn't work, then you need to rethink the definition a bit.

did these guys pay $20k / year to get a degree? NO

Who said you need a college degree to get a job? Most lower skilled jobs require a high school diploma or GED. Bringing college into the question is irrelevant.

Did these guys have to ace college level programs? NO

Again, it's irrelevant. I can be a trash truck driver and not care jack about college. It's still a job.

Do they work everyday 9-5, 200 days per year? NO

Neither do stockbrokers, they work at extraneous hours. Same with cops and lawyers who are self employed. Setting hours on a work schedule does not consistute if it's a job.

Oh, and for the record, Walshy works 40+ hours a week, and still balances with his practice time.

Do they do ANY kind of physical labor? (think construction workers) NO.

ANY? Yes, thumbs. They hurt after a while LOL.

And if any of you idolize these guys...you might want to re-think your life.

Who said anything about idolizing? Yeah, I'm a gamer, so I find this stuff cool, but I see them as just people who have above average talent and are trying to make some money off of it.

Why is it so hard to give respect to someone who works hard for their money? Again, StrongSide getting his $250,000 contract will be my example. He worked hard day after day to get to where he is. Why is it so much different than an actor who memorizes thousands of lines so he gets chosen for a movie role? Or a doctor spending all his time learning medical procedures for his patients?

I use real world examples because what these guys do is now part of the real world. It's a different kind of job- professional gaming. Again, it's not like they're sitting down doing nothing and playing when they feel like it. And they don't necessarily go to these tournaments for fun. Because in order to stay on top, you need to take yourself seriously for the moment at hand, and have fun when it's over. That's why what they do is their job.

Plus, you should at least get to know who you're talking about before making assumptions on them. Most of the people in question have well educated backgrounds (in college/high school) and work very hard on the side to do what they do.

Yeah Bobby, but the actor and the doctor add to society...MLG doesn't.

Aye there's the rub.
