your kidding me right,
guy:hey there
girl:hey
guy:whats your name
girl:(random name) whats your name
guy(random name)
girl:so what do you do
guy:i make 250,000+ dollars playing halo 2 profesionally

what do you think is going to happen after that has just been said.

girl: wow... do you play any sports?
guy: halo
girl: ...
guy: you wanna see my insane halo skillz??
girl: *slap*

catch my drift?
$250,000+tournament winnings each year is a lot of money. That being said, a lot of professional halo players have girlfriends and social lives. Some are in high school, some are in college. They balance gaming, school, and a social life. A lot of people can't do that.

all and all, Navillus makes the only sense on this topic because it takes absolutely NO physical activity to play a little video game. pressing the R trigger and moving a joystick around does not involve any skill whatsoever. "oohh but ur movin ur thumb so it must be a physical sport!!!" again, if moving your thumb is counted as physical activity in your life, you DEFINITELY need to get out more. and i mean a LOT more. No skill? So how about you and 3 friends enter an MLG tournament, and win 20k. If Halo involves no skill, it should be pretty easy for you.

uhh because video games are not work. as much as you want to call it work, it isnt.

just say some hot girl asks you, "hey, you wanna go to the movies tomorrow?" and an MLG nerd says "im sorry, i cant. I got work" she says, "oh really? what do you do?" "video games" *SLAP* (actually i doubt any hot girl would want to hang out with an MLG nerd)

but my point is, you cant tell someone you have to "work" when all your doin is playing video games... it isnt right, its just not right...
Just because you and others can't manage school, a social/sex life, and professional gaming doesn't mean other people can't. Lots of pro gamers have girlfriends, do some research before you make assumptions.

I honestly think most of you are just jealous that you aren't living the lives of these pro gamers. KEVINBROCK and ICEMAN ASSASS1N have been spot on with almost every argument they have made. Reread some of their posts.

Yes but they, as well as you, go off on tangents not pertaining to the original post.

Is MLG a sport?
Are MLGers Athletes?

My posts (in my own opinion) have been 'no, they are not' with information to back up my opinion. Also, throwing around how much money you make does not net you a girlfriend. Classier girls tend to look down on cocky braggarts when it comes to that.

Also, ask the pro gamers what they consider 'hard work'. Dont ask the younger guys because they have no idea. Someone mentioned Walshy works 40 hours per week. I wonder what he considers hard work. And nobody here is jealous dude... that cop out is used by all the 14 year olds on these forums.

Exactly when did I go off topic? Every topic ive posted has been part of the discussion as to wether or not MLG'ers are athletes and MLG is a sport.

We as serious MLG players need to defend our sport not because of the money or the fame in the community, but because of our love for the game. If this sport is ever going to rise out of the basement and get large scale recognition then we have to try and sway as many people that are undecided as we can to our cause. I agree that the little kids out there that cannot properly represent the sport in a debate shouldnt be involved because some people make us look bad. Everyone that plays MLG, wether it be for competetive recreation or serious competetion needs to get the word out and intelligently represent our sport. Those of you who go to the events and play for money or have been lucky enough to make a name for yourself should not sit in the basement and isolate yourself from the aspiring MLG'ers that look up to you. You should be out there interacting with the community trying to get everyone as involved as you can. MLG is still growing and if you want it to become a sport that isnt constantly debated or critisized in forums as to its legitimacy then you ALL need to get out there and work as a team to make it happen.

I think it's pathetic that we as a society, deem it completely warranted to give someone a quarter million dollars for throwing a ball around a field or slapping a puck into a net. Yes, it's entertaining, but these people don't deserve to get paid out the ass while others with real jobs struggle to get by. I think it's even more sad that this has extended itself to video games; it's not even the developers that work tirelessly to produce an incredibly complicated and detailed form of entertainment that are getting paid a metric -blam!-ton of money... it's people who buy it and play it.

It's called talent. T-A-L-E-N-T.

If you have above average speed and strength and endurance, would you not attempt to play football or track or some other professional sport? Please. You're making it sound like people get paid just to throw around footballs and entertain us. Sure, that IS what they're doing, but at what cost?

Lemme break it down for you. Playing football professionally is what these peoples' LIVES are about. They spend their youth keeping in shape, and getting recognition. Then they enter the draft, and work EVERY DAY to stay in shape. On top that, memorize hundreds of plays and calls, and survive training camp. You mention "Real jobs." Well I consider working out to the point of exhaustion in 90 degree heat every day for all of summer a REAL JOB. Then going out and performing in the fall to make the playoffs. THAT is why they get paid so much money.

Do you know what this? It's called AMBITION. It's called DETERMINATION. If someone is going to dedicate so much time and energy and effort into being that good for something they love, then by damn I consider that a REAL JOB.

The same goes for MLG Pros. They love this game so much that they're willing to travel the country and dedicate time to practice. All for the sake of being prepared to face the best. THAT is why StrongSide is getting paid $250,000 to play Halo 2. He's not just sitting on his ass playing games. He's doing WORK.

Why is this so hard to understand?

uhh because video games are not work. as much as you want to call it work, it isnt.

Dude, you have no -blam!- idea about hot girls and MLG players. Have you ever seen Amy or Chantal? Holy -blam!-!!!!! At Meadowlands we were all huddled up watching Pistola do a rubiks cube in under a minute and Amy was like right across from me... all im gonna say is that I wasnt watchin little pistola.... Nice tatas FTW?

people gettin -blam!- paid for sports has NOTHING to do with what ive been saying... its just sick that theres some hard working people in this world who do REAL jobs that require WORK, and people who sit on a sofa all day playing video games gets paid 10 times more than a worker does on a yearly salary... its just sick...

Yes this is a whole different argument. Its just hard to fathom $250k going to a video gamer, and not going towards improving our country's education system. But this can also be said about any professional event. Go capitalism.

That belongs in a different thread though.

Jealous much? I dont blame you...im jealous of them too. If I could just sit at home and play a video game and spend 20 hours a week practicing instead of 40 hours a week working I would do it in a heartbeat. Id have to say that getting paid 250,000 dollars to play a game that you love and traveling all over the USA (and now Canada) to play that game is incredible. Im not going to hate on them because they are lucky enough to be able to do it and that they have the ability to play at that level, thats inmature.

when ever i play w a kid its always a warm up game but we play 10-20 warm up games. when ever he wins he doesn't say anything but when he loses he just says it was a warm up game because he doesnt want to lose to a lower level than he is.

Take into account that the definition of Sport does not say "physical strength". It does say "...requiring physical skill". Lets start with that one first. Is hand eye coordination and reaction time as well as overall mastery of the game not a "skill"?

The other alternate requirment is "physical prowess". As defined by Webster's dictionary, "prowess" means "extraordinary ability". Extraordinary basically means that you can do things that ordinary people cannot do, either through extreme training or natural talent. I think some of the following people fall neatly into this category.

Ogre1
Ogre2
Walshy
Strongside
Shockwav3
Gandhi
Karma
gh0stayam3
Ramby
LEGIT
Naded
Xtremist

Need I go on? Can any of us preform at that level? Wouldnt you call their abilities, reaction times and hand eye coordination "extraordinary"?

So then, based on your example, you'd have to include the world's greatest throw-rug knitter.... the world's greatest air force pilot or helicopter pilot... someone who climbs rocks....or the worlds greatest painter...etc etc etc.. are those all 'sports' now?

where is the line drawn?

If that throw-rug knitter, Air Force pilot, Helicopter pilot or rock climber are in an active competition against others to see who the best is at that particualr activity, then sure...its a sport.

And im willing to bet that Strongside is happy for you and your job. While you go to work everyday, he gets to make 250,000 plus his winnings on the #1 team as well as money from lessons and endorsments doing something he is absolutely passionate about and is talented at. Im sure that Strongside would be more than content to let you keep your job and he keep doing what he does.

So are you saying that playing video games is an athletic activity?

And anything can be a sport if all that is required is hand-eye coordination and reaction time. Pretty general definition so it shouldn't be anything special that MLG is classified as a sport.

There are'nt many people who can who can win game tournaments and make more money in a year then most people. You should'nt judge people on how they make a living, even if it is just playing video games all day. If I could do that I would, but I'm not skilled enough to it, so I have to pick another profession just like you.

To the original poster. I need some warm up games when I play. I can't even play decent when I first start playing, cause I have to get used to the sensitivity I play on. Warm up games also get your reflexes and hand and eye coordination up, so you'll be ready to play.
