If you are talking about single player/campaign, the Assault Rifle works fine. In multiplayer, I find the AR to be basically useless. I immediately switch it for another weapon, ANY other weapon (preferably shotgun). If someone charges me in multiplayer with the AR blazing, I just laugh while I pistol them.
If you have played in multiplayer games with players who are "pistoleros", then you know how the pistol is the best overall weapon, and, actually way overpowered and accurate.
Use the pistol as much as possible in single player/campaign and it will help you immensely in multiplayer. As said above, do not auto fire, single shot only, although you can do it quickly.
A lot of people do 2 shots to the body then one to the head. I just aim for the head as much as possible. Each game you play will have varying lag, so you have to adjust your lead as you fire. If someone is charging straight at you on level ground, you don't have to worry about lead.
Have you tried "target practice" with the pistol and other weapons? Make up your own game on a big, open level (like Blood Gulch) with all weapons and vehicles. Use a password so no one else can join to bother you. Then, just grab different weapons and shoot at targets and see where and how much they impact. Vary your distances. It is amazing how completely inaccurate the AR is. How devastating the shotgun is at close (very close) range, but loses all accuracy at any kind of distance (or to be more precise, spreads its shot). How incredibly accurate, using single shot, the pistol is out to ridiculous ranges, almost competes with the sniper rifle. How the pistol loses accuracy within two or three shots when you auto fire. Then, play with the vehicles, and LEARN how to drive a hog.
Sorry for the length of this post, hope it helps. There seems to be a ton of posts recently with people saying how great the AR is, which totally baffles me.
