Yeah, i know that it is the ultimate close range, meele attack weapon but how effective is it. I mean you have to be stealthy and if you are spotted someone can take you out pretty quickly if they duel--wield. So how useful is it?

It depends on how you use it. I found that if you switch to it only when you're in range of your target, it's extremely useful. Trying to storm a base with it out will just make you a preferred target, though.

If you melee someone with it, do they die automatically? or do they only die when you do the lunge attack?

I think people will die by both of the attacks. The lunge attack is a faster version of the other attack(s),so the lunge attack is most effective when you will surprise someone or when you are protecded from other buddies as you storm the enemy with lunge attacks

I think it's only a one hit kill if you use the lunge attack. But this theory can be challenged by looking at the 3D screenshot of the Elite taking out three Spartans with one swipe.(Well, that's what it looks like at least) Plus, a player's health at the time of striking can also come into question.
