As a side note: Anyone who entertains people is performing a job i.e. giving back to society. Street entertainers, MLG pros, football players, actors it's all the same.

Two bums fighting on the side of the road is entertaining. Does that mean they are performing a job and giving back to society?

Are the bums getting paid to fight? Is there a competetion to see who is the best fighting bum on the streets? Do the bums have tournaments and sign their fighters to contracts? Do the bums have tons of fans?

If your answer is yes then yes, bum fighting is a sport. You may not like it but you sure as hell arent giving a very good argument.

Giving back to society as in ummmm...ENTERTAINMENT!

I dont remember Von tyrant ever saying a contract, money, or competitions were involved in his statement.

If you think about it Navillus, wouldn't you have a lack of credibility, in that you've never been or on the brink of getting paid to actually do this. I'm in the same boat. I've had a job, but I've never been to an event, so I haven't experienced both sides. So shouldn't we take it from people who have, like walshy, and Zach, who have worked AND gone to events. Wouldn't they have the moist credibility on the matter. Because me and you can sit on the sidelines and judge what its like to be a competitive gamer, but do either of us really know?

I've been paid to play semi-pro soccer in Chicago...and paid for winning volleyball tournaments....so no.. I don't see much of a difference. Still don't consider it work or a job, ESPECIALLY if its not what I do for a career or full time.

That's the thing- you may not see it as a job, but some people do. Notice we're not trying to change your opinion, but you anti-MLG debaters sure seem to want to change ours.

We're just asking that you respect their decision to game, and not look down on them as miscreants of society or something like that. They're not losers, they're not rejects. They're just professional gamers who work to prepare for tournaments so they can make money.

That's all.

I didn't want to give the impression that I'm Anti-MLG or ever thought that these guys were crap or whatever. I play just as many games as they or you guys do. Honestly, its a hell of a lot better than sitting in front of my TV mindlessly watching shows / movies. The only reason I post here is my opinion on whether or not it should be considered a job or a sport. Thats all.

I, for one am trying to rspect your argument but you havent really given me a good argument so far as to why MLG is not a sport or why its not a job. The only thing youve managed to say about either subject is that its not "hard" labor and that its not a sport because its not "athletic". Those are your opinions, everyone has them and thats completely fine but if youre going to debate a point, make sure that point is valid and you can back it up.

I have provided many good arguments, you guys just seem to completely ignore them or change the subject. Just go through all the posts Ive made and you'll see a bunch.

Bottom line:

Are they getting paid to preform a certian task? Yes.
Are they preforming that task? Yes.

That makes it a job. Wether you think its one or not because of your "sweat of my brow" attitude is completely your opinion. Thats all it is though is an opinion.

Is it athletic according to the modern definition of the word? its debatable.
Does it require Skill? Can you play that good, I cant.
Does it Require Physical Prowess? Do you have their hand-eye coordination, finesse and reaction times?
Do they play in a competetive enviroment? YES

That makes it a sport. Why are we still here arguing?

Its not the real ogres clan. I have friends in their clan (which is an open clan). Id be happy to get you an invite if youre that desperate to get pooped on by real MLG players.

It wasn't their second account. It was people trying to pose, and failing.

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get... but you can bet it will be chocolate.

In professional football.... theres teams, arenas, choachs, bets, money, comepetition, players, sponsors and the skills needed for football. I belive i metioned pretty much everything NEEDED for a professional football game... well look at this.

In professional halo (mlg)... theres teams, arenas, choachs, bets, money, competition, players, sponsoors and the skills needed for halo.

Both need alot of training, physical fitness, hand eye coordination, and amazing timing. The only difference you can say about them is that football is physical. But even so that does not make it not a sport. I belive chess is a sport, isnt it?

also

Websters definition for athelete:

Athlete: a person trained in exercises or games requiring strength, skill, stamina, etc.

Halo players need strength to stay fit as well as mental strength for the game, skill certainly, stamina for their skill as well as stamina to keep playing the game, and etc.

Websters definition for job"

Job: 1. a piece of work done for pay. 2. a task;duty.

I belive winning a competition would fall in one of these.

On the other topic.

Gaming is classified by the Federal Government as a sport. That is unarguable.

A gamer is considered an athlete as well because he meets the following criteria:
They are entertainment for an audience/fanbase.

They require specific physical features to make them above average professionals of their craft, such as Hand-eye-coordination and superior reflexes as well as intelligence.

It is also obviously a job seeing as how they are being payed to do a specific task, and they carry it out according to a contract signed with the employer. (MLG)
