Gaming is classified by the Federal Government as a sport. That is unarguable.

Cool but who wants to argue that? I wouldn't look to the government to give a definition on "sport".

A gamer is considered an athlete as well because he meets the following criteria:
They are entertainment for an audience/fanbase.

They require specific physical features to make them above average professionals of their craft, such as Hand-eye-coordination and superior reflexes as well as intelligence.

So the overweight unhealthy pro gamer is an athlete, while a guy in excellent shape who goes to the gym daily isn't?

That's a terrible definition.

Who let the tards out? Do you guys even understand the point I was arguing? Tell me where I said MLG players don't deserve contracts. Please quote it for me. And the two teenagers sending each other myspace links of themselves, neither of you have ever had a real job. You guys have no credibility in this discussion.

Navillus, please don't use the word "tard" we're trying to have a public discussion with two sides having clearly drawn lines. Flaming only makes this a spam thread as opposed to a debate.

Now, what constitutes a "Real" job? Sweeping trash at an elementary school is a job. Flipping burgers is a job. Sitting behind a desk (like what I've been doing on and off the past three years in between college) is a job.

And the fact that someone isn't employed shouldn't prevent them from partaking in this discussion. Because even if you're not working, I'm sure you could appreciate someone working to earn a paycheck, as long as its honest work.

People with no credibility should not partake in discussions about what constitutes work... that is like me trying to participate in a discussion at my work about budget finances when I have no experience in budgeting. Sweeping trash is not recreation, flipping burgers is not recreation, sitting behind a desk doing office work is not recreation. Playing Halo 2, whether for competition, for fun, or for money, is RECREATION no matter how you guys try to spin it. Just because a select few get a bonus for playing 8 hours a day, everyday, does not mean it constitutes as being a job. This is the reality and people need to accept it. Society will never see MLG gaming as a job or a sport. Period.

Discussion over.

I must say you throughly convinced me to slam on my brakes and make a complete 180 from pro to anti-gaming. I mean you definately took into account my first hand experience that your ignorant ass has never been through, and then applied it to your point of view. I definately think of gaming as never ever for any reason being anything more than just for fun. I mean playing competetively for money? when has money ever put something to a level past recreation? I dunno man, i mean obviously all landscaping is recreation because some people enjoy gardening and shaping their yards. Obviously being a chef is completely recreational because I enjoy cooking, even since I was 8! I mean if an 8 year old can cook, it must be a joke of a job for a 40 year old MAN to do it. AH HAHAHA, it's just laughable how now, because of your argument, I know see almost all middle class jobs as completely recreational. I don't know how I didn't see it before!!! Navillus, I present to you the Nobel Peace prize for single handedly, and permanently, ending this debate.

And for your information Navillus, who is obviously santa clause in disguise because he knows what everyone does all the time. I started working at 16 at a Junk Yard doing inventory and dealing with customers, then at an Auto Body doing prep and recon, I've done days with a septic friend of my family who pays out big for dealing with "poop", and I've done a whole "poop" load of carpentry. So overall Mr. Clause AKA (ha HAaAA! I knew santa was real!!!!) Navillus, I have worked many real jobs.

You should probably take a step back from yourself and realize that I'm trying to inform you of the other side of the argument no one else here has been able to show. Your disregard for what I've posted acts as a crystal clear window, showing your stuborn ignorance and bias against gaming as a job. It is just as much work as most other jobs. You do not understand and choose not to accept it. Even when I've shown exactly what it takes to be pro, so you YOURSELF can make your own juxtaposition. You should probably just bow out of this discussion now before your pride drops below the suicide line.

No scope headshoting Noobullus all day,
Zach

Acctually if you have ever even looked into MLG, or been to one like I have, you would notice that about 1% of the people in the venue are fat and overweight...most of them at 6'5" 260 lbs. (Kill3n lol) But seriously there are NO fat people at MLG, if you looked for one you woulden't find any.

Did I ever say that?

My comment was a hypothetical to show how absolutely ludicrous your "definition" of athlete is.

Matter of fact, Did I even mention MLG?

You are aware their are more gaming leagues around the world besides MLG right?

Yeah Karma used to be fat, now look at him. Best shape of his life.

Ironically, his Captain (Shockwave) and Best Friend (Gandhi) are the ones who pushed him constantly to keep losing weight.

LOL That is so true, and thats why its hilarious.

And seriously, you read my post wrong. I said those we're the features that made gamers athletes, not the only features to make anyone an athlete. Like for football, you need strength, endurance, intelligence etc..etc...

Why would you have two definitions for an athlete?

If you think about it Navillus, wouldn't you have a lack of credibility, in that you've never been or on the brink of getting paid to actually do this. I'm in the same boat. I've had a job, but I've never been to an event, so I haven't experienced both sides. So shouldn't we take it from people who have, like walshy, and Zach, who have worked AND gone to events. Wouldn't they have the moist credibility on the matter. Because me and you can sit on the sidelines and judge what its like to be a competitive gamer, but do either of us really know?

I've been paid to play semi-pro soccer in Chicago...and paid for winning volleyball tournaments....so no.. I don't see much of a difference. Still don't consider it work or a job, ESPECIALLY if its not what I do for a career or full time.

There's much more work and hours needed to be a pro gamer. A lot of the people pushing themselves right now have dropped out of school for more time to practise. You again, are in no place to shoot down my experiences because you compare it to a sport where natural athletic prowess is the main factor. In halo it's your mind. You must train your mind, and the mustles in your fingures to be the best. 99.9% of people couldn't possibly be pro because there's a mental limit to what you can reach, or the progress is so slow its almost intangible. The same goes for the ability to play soccer. But you played semi-pro in the chicago area. For us to make money we have to be the best IN THE WORLD. Swollow that one for a second, let me know if you choke.

John Daly is a professional athlete, he's fat, out of shape, and smokes, but he's still an athlete for being able to have amazing control of nerves, hand eye coordination, and is overall control of his body even though he's fat. A huge fat lineman in the NFL is still an athlete even though he's fat and slow. So yes rex, you are wrong. lol

Well if there is one definition of an athlete then only one or two sports could contain athletes. Think about it.

And when he gained physical fitness, he also became the worlds most skilled halo player. Your bodies condition does in general have a direct effect on your gaming performance. I've said this before, I go for runs to prepare for tournaments, so does my buddy unkowngod who got 17th in 4v4 and should have made pro bracket FFA at meadowlands. He works out too. It's not uncommon for the truely serious players to work on their body too. You should see StK Tupac, he used to be gangley and goofey, NOW HE'S JACKED! just like strangepurple, one of the nerdiest looking halo1 guys. Now he's got contacts and he's huge. Anyways guys, just saying a lot of the serious players are decent sized. Exceptions are people like itwasluck and bonfire who are a couple of super rich boys that have nerd blood. You should see their family, It's obvious, their dad honestly had a pocket protector. But you can't knock the dad, he made something out of himself. I respect that.

I don't like to think =[

So answer this question please:

What sports are left out of this definition?

"A person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina"
