A notice to all Bungie.net vistiors with Vista operating system........

I have been working on a sidebar gadget for Vista users, it displays the RSS feed straight from Bungie and shows the news updates straight onto your desktop. No need to open your Web Browser anymore, just check the news from Bungie straight off your desktop! Version 0.0.0.1 is now released.

A copy of this Gadget can be downloaded from http://www.pastimegamers.com/Bungie.gadget it has also been submitted for approval onto Windows Live Download. Future versions will include a better graphical look, there is very little room to work with with a width restriction of 150 pixles to fit onto the side bar. However some photoshoping will be done and offer a better graphical look for a not so bland Gadget on your desktop.

Please feel free to leave suggestions and opinions on this Gadget here.

To install this gadget, copy and paste the above link into your webbrowser. Hit Open, and when prompted hit install. This will add the gadget to your sidebar.

(Moderator, I would love a sticky for this post if it is at all possible, I think this is a helpful Gadget for Bungie.com) Thanks.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Wow, jsut seeing that you typed it as Bungie.com has me thinking this is BS.

I don't see how it's BS, I was just trying to advertise a Vista gadget for Bungie News I made to all my fellow Vista users. However, feel free not to use it.

I've got Vista, but i don't like RSS feeds. I'd rather go to bungie.net.

Either way you contact the site (Bungie.net or Bungie.com) doesn't matter. It doesn't say anything about the legitimacy of the add-on he is offering. Personally I think it is really neat and I'm going to hop onto my Laptop to get it.

Edit:

I really like the Gadget, however, I can't seem to install it. It gives me the option of downloading the ZIP file. I downloaded it and I opened up the HTML file and I was able to view the news. However it just won't let me add it as a gadget. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Either way I really like the gadget, even though I have to view it through IE7.

Alright, sorry for the wait, I had to work.

For those of you who have downloaded it
My site doesn't support .gadget files. I didn't realize this till a couple of minute ago.
I have submitted it for approval for Windows LIVE where they can support .gadget files.

However until then, here are some steps you can follow to get it to work.
1 Go to START
2 RUN (If you dont see RUN in the search bar type RUN and it will bring it up)
3 Copy and paste this in there %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
4. Make a new folder named Bungie.gadget
5.) Redownload the gadget, open or save it, then unzip the files to that Bungie.gadget folder you made.

http://www.pastimegamers.com/screenshot.jpg Theres a screenshot of the Gadget on my desktop. It scrolls the news.
5 Unzip your files from the download into the Bungie.gadget folder.

I apologize for the inconvinence of the download process,

Vista already comes with a gadget that streams rss feeds to the sidebar. So is this one only streaming Bungie feeds and ignoring the rest, is that the pro?

  • 06.23.2007 5:30 PM PDT

h3wheelmen.com

Well if it come with it, I sure as hell don't have it. So it must be the pro huh?

The only one Microsoft has is one that displays microsoft RSS that comes with Vista, thanks.

I came out like a negative nancy there, sorry about that. I mean the idea is great but i just thought that all versions of vista already had it. Im running the home premium version on my laptop and desktop and both installments came with that gadget. I havent fiddled too much with it but it seems like its streaming all rss feeds saved in the browser so therefor i thought it would be a pro if yours only streamed certain feeds, the default vista feed box might do this too however but not to my knowledge.

I dont know what that means since ive been streaming all types of feeds including those from xbox.com and bungie.net in the feed-box im talking about. The box isnt running in the default vista set-up but its installed and can be picked and activated by right clicking the sidebar/more gadgets/

The one I have only feeds Microsoft Feed, I'm going to work on one soon where you can input the Feed URL and it'll display that Feed.

My copy of Vista only came with general RSS feed for Windows and other stuff (I have Vista Home Premium). I really like the convenience that this offers. Of course visiting the main page and reading it from there is a must for me anyways. Great job on your Gadget and thanks for the extra installation steps.

Of course, you could just buy a mac and run OS X, which lets you drag 'n drop portions of web pages into "instant widgets" and save yourself some time.

We will be seeing that in the next OS from M$, it has always been that way.

I applaud your effort, i really do. Maybe when it is done i will use it. But..

If you use the "microsoft feeds" rss feed gadget you can set it to get the news directly from b.net. Go to the rss button on b.net's front page, select "subscribe to this feed" and create a "bungie news" folder in the "microsoft feed" folder. Now go to your rss feed gadget and select options. Once their scroll down until you see the folder named "Bungie News".

Funny story. I sent an email to Indianapolis's leading radio station (x103) asking them to create a gadget for vista's sidebar. He says its a good possibility and that he is glad i mentioned it. A re-assurance i suppose.

Glad you like it Zee, I'm working on a much larger and better one which will display Gaming Feeds. Though now I know you can drag and drop RSS feeds to the other microsoft feed box, hopefully mine will be more graphically appealing. I've got all the scripting done, just working on the graphical aspects of it now.

How long does it take for a gadget to be approved for the windows live download page?

Bravo!! I am in love with your gadget (hehe)
but seriously! Awesome work! This went right below my Halo 3 countdown gadget!

I used to hate Vista...but this just made me fall in love with it just a little more.
