Ach! Was ist los?

It works for me.

That's right, I'm running Halo 2 Vista under Windows XP. Sorry, Microsoft, your cynical cash grab has failed. I've paid for the game and it's mine, but I can't plunk down a cool thousand for a copy of Vista and the hardware upgrades I'd need in order to run it. With this loader thingy, I can run Halo 2 with playable framerates and not bankrupt myself in the process.

That said, I'm surprised I paid so much for this thing. The UI is a straight copypasta of the XBox version's and poorly suited to pointing and clicking. There is also far too much dependence on Live and online functions; I still haven't gotten the activation wizard to work. The maximum mouse sensitivity setting isn't high enough.

It's almost as if Microsoft acknowledges the presence of only two types of user: super casual and bleeding edge. If you're super casual, you play Halo 2 on the XBox. If you're bleeding edge, you play Halo 2 on Windows Vista. If you're anything else, you don't exist.

I am starting to lose patience.

Making the UI able to use the 360 controller is what made them fubar it. I hate how the controller auto aim is ONLY for the 360 controller, not any logitech ones. I'm going to get the game and just use the editing kit until I can upgrade to a computer with PCI-e 16 slots. So I'm going to try out the map editor, it will be nice to try it out.
(Don't you just love friends with games you can try out before buying, and who have dual-boot comps)

I agree with you BobBQ, I played it on Vista at a friends house, it was horrible, they barely were able to get 30 fps with there Geforce 7600GS. It should be able to get quite a few more on XP. I love it on XP, it doesn't have the memory leak it has in Vista, and minimum requirements actually play it well.
Its nice to hear that other people are having success with the program.
Have you been able to get onto LIVE yet?

If any of you haven't heard
People have managed to get H2V to work on XP, and many of the problems don't happen is XP. The mouse lag is gone, you can cap frames, you can get playable framerates(30 fps) with a Geforce 6800 on high setting at 1280x1024.
So what do think?
EDIT: I changed the title feel better?
I have playable frames on a nvidia 6150

Holy ****! You are my hero. Seriously.

Also, nice to hear the mouse sensitivity is BS for you too. Within 10 minutes of play I went from 6 to 9 sensitivity. Within the next 10 minutes I was up to 10 (max) and needed more. For comparison sake, I use 6 or 7 sensitivity on Halo PC.

However, I think eventually Windows Vista will be the better operating system for gaming in due time. It's not like XP is going to be better forever, right? Just wait, you'll see improvements and better performance in Vista.

Probably not. To this day, you get better DX9.0 performance using Win2K than XP.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Holy -blam!- a ninja, at the MAW, that is #3 in such a short time.
But, as for the subject at hand, I will admit that I am wrong about the involment Bungie had with H2V, but in reality for all intents and purposes, what does this change? So Bungie endorses it, I'm pretty sure the had little to do with much else, and if they did, than they are pretty adament about not talking about H2V. I'm glad that Halo 2 works on xp, but can't help but be cautious about the idea of it, they manage to write .dlls and a whole complete api for xp, wonder what else could be in those files?

I feel that this is totally unethical.

However, if all the features work I'm going for it!

I'll pick up the game soon too if it works! lol

The point of the matter is that Bungie is a mess to put a game out like this. Who is Bungie and what power do they really have to shape their own games and destiny? This should be a big wakeup call to the skilled employees at Bungie. Time to leave and create something fresh...you know, like Halo was originally.

I hate microsoft so much!!! Those -blam!-s have a manopoly on everything and there is almost nothing i can do to stop them! Why did you have to be a bunch of cheap sell outs, bungie?! Why?! Now microsoft implements corperate greed under your good name (Bungie). I don't understand why they couldn't have just let it come out for all computers (vista, XP, OSX, Linux, etc...)...i know microsoft as trying to queeze a bit more cash from the game, but look at how poorly its selling? All because of F*&$ing vista!!!!!!!
Something must be done about this! FIGHT MICRSOFT!!!!!!!! Stop those thieves!

we shouldn't have to deal with this bull -blam!- from them! btw, i have a mac book pro dual booting OSX and Vista (not geinuine!) so m$ can suck my balls!

Anyway I'm impressed that it runs on Linux, must be through Wine. Might have to check that out.
Doesn't surprise me at all that it runs fine on XP. Other than that Windows Live stuff not sure why it was limited to Vista. Shadowrun is suffering from the same thing ATM.

This is certainly nice to see. I bet the HG team are crying themselves to sleep tonight knowing that a few teenagers with spare time made a better port then they did, and it only took them a couple of months.

This game has officaly failed. That's sad how a famous game's sequel can fail so much , though ,it made more on Xbox ,but Halo1 made pretty much on PC and 2 just failed. That's the result of Bungie , MS and ' Tired Gun ' not telling any updates and not caring about it at all.Man im going to play this -blam!- on XP maybe too . If the mouse isn't laggy.. I haven't got the game yet ,either Vista but im definatly trying this out. YO PH4ILED TIRED GUN ,MS , BUNGIE , XBOX FOOLS >:/

I saw Halo 2 Vista working on XP coming a mile away, a long time ago.

See what I have said on my website (which is for sale) about Halo 2 Vista coming to an XP near you.

http://halo2vista.com/information/opinionsabouthalo2vista.htm l

Captiosus:

"It's only a matter of time before it's patched back to Vista only."

1. Then its only a matter of time when a hacker gets it back to XP again LoL!

2. If Microsoft do that they are going to look even worse than they do now for shafting its customers.

In my opinion they should blind eye it, that way they will make even more money as people that don't want to use Vista can play it.

Bungie endorsed this port of a game. They endorsed Windows Vista, and they most certainly endorsed having this game only for Vista
Of course they would it would be stupid and irresponsible for them to do anything else. Considering that the XP operating system, is reaching end of life and Microsoft will stop offering Windows XP for sale by January 2008 with support being discontinued by January 2009 creating a program for anything else BUT Vista would be like creating programs for CPM, DOS or the Commodore 64.

Posted by: darthbo.
The fact of the matter is, is that people have found a way to play the game under Windows XP, a fact that Bungie has stated (IIRC) would only run under Vista.
Bungie's statements, the ones you are trying to refute, are still true. You can not load the Halo 2 Vista game on XP WITHOUT an unsupported (buggy) emulator. Just try to get support for the game running through an emulator on XP. Emulation technology is nothing new you can still play your Commodore 64 games on a PC or run Windows on Linux, or the old Apple OS on Windows. Try to get support for it. No company is going to write and support a program with the specific intent that it run in emulation.

I just don't understand this resistance to a new Operating system. XP is 9 year old technology. Are people intentionally trying to be left behind? Like it or not Vista is here to stay. The ship has sailed on the OS debate

"the only thing we have to fear is fear it self..... and monsters"

Wow some how I'm not surprised that people got it running on XP. But I am surprised that it works better on XP.

The reason people are resisting Vista is it so expensive to get it then upgrade you computer for it. Thats why I'm against it at least. But with this new info on H2V being able to run on XP that brings hope to me getting it . But I do Believe that it won't be long until MS figures it out and patchs the game up.

So its good to hear that it will work on Xp. But like its been said before, MS will patch it back to Vista then of course hackers will bring it to Xp again, is it really worth having to find the hacked patches all the time just to play a game? In MY OPINION it would be so much easier to get Vista and play it like it suppose to be played, and for all you MS haters, why are you even running windows if you hate them so bad? Oh yea i forgot its easier to just jump on the bandwagon of haters, lol.

halo 2 sucks im sure someone will make halo2vistasucks.com. I like halo 2....i lik(ed) bungie before they became sellouts, but i can't stand MICROSUCK. The only reason i use my non genuine vista is because i need it to run games that don't run on osx. (halo custom edition)
