It helps everybody. Not me. I never actually realized it was there until I read a post about it here in the forums.
Just because you don't realize it doesn't mean it doesn't help you.
Halodeth is correct, it helps everyone. I prefer to use the term "aim assist" (because auto aim is something included in aim assist) and it's definitely needed.
Granted, there's a noticeable amount of aim assist in Halo 2 (by that I mean auto aim, reticule stickyness, lock on feature, etc.) and it's intention was to make it an easier game to play, hence why there's a lot of people who play it and can develope basic skills rather quickly.
However, everyone needs aim assist. Try killing someone on your team. You'll notice it's considerabley hard to do. Now take into account that not a lot of people have the time, dedication, or effort to get that good at aiming without aim assist. Also, take into account the fact that this game is played on Xbox Live (and has lag) and is played on a controller, and you'll see why aim assist is a necessity.
But a lot of people complained that it's too high. Personally, I think it's............ "ok," (it is high though) but I do realize that many a battle does have multiple opponents, and if someone jumps in front of you, your aimer will follow them. Doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. Couple that with the fact that it makes this game a little too easy for beginners, and you'll see why it got toned down.
Halo 3's aim assist is perfect, in my opinion. Makes it so that new players can still get double kills and have fun, but the better players will be able to dominate.
All in all though, every console game needs some degree of aim assist to function effectively.
