some one told me that Halo (the story) is based off the bible in some way or another.
that is not that cool if it is ,but it is also weird how the most popular game is supposably based off of the bible. i hope that it is not based off of the bible. mainly cuz im Athiest ( i don't think i spelled that right). not only that ,but because we could kind of predict what is going to happen in the future games.

To late, it is based on the bible. i've said this before in another thread so I won't go into details but it is. I happen to be athiast too but at least the religous story in halo is more interesting than the one in the bible.

Yes, this theory has been around since Halo's release. I can't say for sure if Bungie have officially said anything; but it obviously has a strong biblical base.

Yeah it's pretty biblical, and my God, who cares if it is, it's a good game with a good storyline. If it offends you so much then don't play it.

I wouldn't say that it's based off the Bible. Granted, it shares some common themes, and uses the same terminology for similar ideas (the Flood, the Ark, Halo, the Covenant, etc), but so does a lot of other stuff. The Matrix movies shared a lot more with the Bible than Halo. I mean, really, the Greeks said that there are only about 3 original stories in the world, so what's the use of complaining?

how can killing aliens be in the bible?!

  • 11.20.2004 5:54 AM PDT

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Bungie is "spreading the good word"... subliminally(sp?).

Ach! Was ist los?

Nah; Halo borrowed more from Marathon than from the Bible... and Marathon didn't really borrow stuff from the Bible at all.

It did, however, borrow a lot from Beavis & Butthead, H.P. Lovecraft, Army of Darkness, and a wide variety of other cultural symbols.

The number 7 is from the bible. You can relate anything to everything, if you try hard enough.

Not very imaginative, are you?

It is disappointing that Halo has such strong Biblical influences. There are a lot of... how should I say it... "prophetic" parts of Halo, things that, in the game's story, seem supernatual. This gives the story an interesting feel, but which is ruined once you realized it's mainly Bible-based.

And it's atheist.

Edit: The story might be original though. Through it you do see a lot of Biblical influences, such as the number 7.

Or read John 1:17 or Revelations 1:17, It's a tried and true reference -- why do you think they called it 'Halo' instead of 'Ring'.

It's very basic -- because anything can be traced to a Bible or Koran or to any other reference you want -- it's like 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon -- put enough twist on something - and you can link anything to anything else.

You mean you can make a relationship that doesn't exist?

That may be true, however, the fascination with the number 7 can be traced back to the Bible. Bungie has a fascination with the number 7. Bungie made Halo 2.

It's pretty obvious.

**spoilers**

The real one that would determine it is what the "Arc" is, meaning Earth. What was its purpose, beside just shutting down the rings? If it was meant as a safe-haven from the flood, then it is obviously very Biblical. And with it goes my fanship of Bungie, who stoop to using old religious texts as a cheap way of adding meaning to their stories.

Though we don't know exactly yet. There may be yet another twist.

What if the Ark is simply 'on' earth. Or for more of that biblical controversy -- Think of the term "Ark of the Covenant". ;-)

*more spoilers*

Right, you have Covenant, Flood, Arc...

It's interesting that the Forerunners died to stop the Flood. If the Forerunners are supposed to represent "God", then their self-sacrifice would be like Jesus's - in the Bible he died to save us (some of us, anyway).

The Flood, made by the Forerunners (God), is the main antagonist part. Doesn't really add up, though, because God never had to save himself from the Flood. Perhaps I'm just not thinking this through enough.

The Covenant also doesn't make sense. It should be a covenant of the protagonists, right? Not a covenant of the enemies (even though some are now allies. Perhaps the covenant will change?).

[something else, more spoilers]

It's interesting to note something that happened in one of the cinimatics that was.. interesting.

Bungie had at one point in time stated that you would be able to go to the moon (at least that's what I remember). Interesting that you never actually went; it was probably one of the parts they cut because they weren't able to finish.

Now watch one of the first cinimatics.... the camera's zoomed in on Truth's head. When the scene shifts the main jewel on his headdress is replaced by the moon. Was that a simple transition or a bit of symbolism?

I am Atheist to, but I enjoy mythology, so Halo being somewhat based off the Bible, is win-win for me. Since I of course like the gameplay of Halo, and that I find it neat and interesting that they are mixing mythology into the storyline.

Ignore these four words.

Of course Halo/Halo 2 borrows themes from the Bible, It also borrows themes from other religions, mythology, and other cultural themes.
