Hi, I am new here and I wanted to play multiplayer on the internet but I am having problems. I have broadband access from RoadRunner and the cable modem goes to my Linksys cable DSL router, then I am connected to my network switch and then to my PC. My Lan is 100mb to my PC. I have good bandwidth as far as I can tell but can't figure what is wrong. I can join an internet game but not all of my controls work. I can fire, move, jump, melee, crouch, flashlight. I cannot reload, swap weapons, enter vehicles. My grenade throw works but no grenade is launched. I get the graphic on the bottom right of the screen showing a picture of a network port with a red X. I also can move and then end up right where I started. What gives?

Heyyo,

Well, that network port with the X means "connection error" and your comp is having problems sending/recieveing packets of information.

That router tends to do ok, so I wouldn't worry too much aboot that. The only prob with routers is when you try to host, then you have to manually open ports.

Is there anything which would give the biggest problem on my setup? Other than, of course, bad networking traffic from my ISP. My cable modem gets an IP address, then my Cable DSL router gives me a dhcp address on my Lan. I should not have to plug directly into the cable modem to make a good connection. Perhaps it is the cable modem. I will see if my ISP can run some checks on the signal. I just wanted to make sure that I was not missing something as simple as a setup. Thanks.

Your setup seems ok, it's more or less the same as mine: modem, router, PC(s). Seems odd that you can join games but then experience extreme lag...

It's driving me crazy. I am up to date on all of my software and patches. I never had a problem with any version or patch. I even diabled all of the Mcafee and firewall stuff and it was not the problem. I don't know if I would call it a LAG, but it does show that network connectivity icon on the bottom right with the red X when I try to swap weapons or jump in a vehicle. I need to find a way to test this and get some stats. Maybe I can tweek something to get it to work normal. I have been through all of the help stuff and no mention of my symptoms.

Troubleshooting update...

I bypassed my Linksys router w/ VPN and it allowed me to play properly online.

I was taking the IP address from my cable modem and then getting a DHCP address from my Linksys router to my PC on my LAN. Could there be a problem using a DHCP address on my desktop and playing multiplayer on the internet? I was considering swapping out my cable modem until bypassing the router fixed the problem. Anybody have any ideas.
Thanks for your help. I prefer using DHCP addresses on my LAN.

Steve

One question. How many people do u try 2 play with. Because if its like over 10 then its just that ur computer can't handle it so it just lags really bad. try going on a small server. say 4 people at max or just create ur own game.

That is not the problem, but I have seen where that can happen. My system is pretty new and is not the problem here. I have got it down to a few variables. I am fine when I connect my PC directly to my cable modem and use the IP address provided to me. I have problems when I use my Linksys BEFSR11 router. I have tried setting ports forwarding on my router but it has not helped yet. Do I need to add all of the ports for Game Spy? I think it may be my DHCP address. I was reading where I may need to set up a DMZ. Any ideas on if I need that?
