well it depends on what you want to do, if you want to make your pc more "future proof" go for quad cores the Q6600 processer is the sweet spot at the minute,
(quad core @ 2.4ghz with 2x4mb cache but also this processer has gotto be one of the best overclockers u can get enougher 25% performance out of them (3ghz) and that processer will last you for 5+ years fairly well. ( they can go higher but i would recommend the max overclockign is 25% to conserve its life a bit more)
the other processers ala extreme Q6700 and Q6800 are slightly overkill atm, for rediculas prices, you be looking at £300 ontop of the price of the Q6600 (the Q6800 is only 2.9ghz so if you got the Q6600 overclocked will be slightly faster at a much more affordable price :)
note highly recommended getting decent cooler help it out a bit jsut incase ;)
edit also i would recommend looking at a very decent motherboard which will support extreme etc for say 5 years time u can jsut purchase new processer and low low prices. ASUS Striker SLI Extreme motherboard. is a very decent motherboard will again give your pc the ability of future upgrades
