the brutes guns DO have the knives. on the back there is a really big blade. just because the covie's tech is superior doesn't mean that they are forbidden use cold hard steel on pain of death. they use doors, just like we do. they have force fields, but do you see one around EVERY covie door in the game? no. i though so.

as for the Elite's shields, yes, they do recharge. it even says so in the manual. it just takes a little longer then the MC's sheilds do, for the sake of making it a little easier to kill them.

thank you, and good night!

I would like them to have it in campaign only. That way, you can be camoflauged, sneak behind a brute, elite, etc, and slice their jugular! Guts, blood spurting everywhere! AWESOME! I would really like the knife in campaign. Also, since we are able to sprint, how will we? I really want to race hogs in multiplayer! Then, if we are sprinting, can we run and punch-a-grunt to death? Just the same as MC does in *SPOILERS AHEAD SPOILERS AHEAD!* First Strike? That would be tight. What do you guys think?

u sprint by holding down the forward control and after a while u lower ur weapon and start sprinting

i really don't think that the sprinting is really necesary. MC did just fine without it in the first halo. i wouldn't mind it not being there at all.

and why would he sprint after holding forward down after a period of time? that would become really annoying. scenario:

you are walking down a long hall, and you know there is someone around the corner. you hold forward to get to the end ofthe hall. but, forgetting that holding forward makes you sprint, you speed up, put your weapons down, and run into the wall. then the gold elite that was hiding makes mince meat out of you with his sword.

What the hell do you need a knife for? If you run up behind someone, just smack them in the back with the butt of your gun. Works just fine for me, I don't know how the knife would be any different other than the animation for the enemy's death.

Simple. It is a energy field that is in such a state that all energies that interfere with it are repulsed in a slippery like movement.

So... your explanation for why the shield is slippery is that it is slippery...? You're not validating the basis of your objection to the knife.

Anything? Nope. Bulletproof vests are designed to take high impact rounds, not a slower moving/ non-hyper velocity object. Meaning going through kevlar is no problem because it is not a sudden impact like a bullet. And we are talking energy, not the normal human physical stuff here. As for the crossbow. Yes it can penetrate, but I own three AR-15s(civilian M16s). They make cynder blocks turn to rubble. With just one shot. Don't try me on guns, I know too damn much.

Here you're admitting that knives work better against impact resistant armour then bullets do. Hence supporting that knives would be useful. I would be insane to argue this point.

The Chief in all true Bungie storyline purposes can't lift over 77 tons. Maybe 3, but not 77.

Okay, considering the average rifle has kinetic energy of between 2000 and 3000 ft/lbs I don't see your point. Assuming the Master Chief can only put a single ton, a literal ton, of force behind a knife's pinhead... Well, that would be a big number and very highly penetrating, much more penetrating then a rifle round. Knowing ballistics you would agree that higher energy over a smaller impact area results in greater penetration correct?

Also the knife would break, as I have already stated.

It might break- yes. However you are assuming of course that in 500 years metallurgy hasn't advanced in the slightest or that they might have thickened the knife to industrial machining standards.

No, it would be insanely weak, not powerful. Knife go snap real easy. As for the plasma sword...that is another lecture all together.

I doubt it would be insanely weak. Still, I wouldn't want a knife in a game of Halo, I'd rather rip off the plasma sword. Oh, and lecture away. I like it.

Hikaru knows so much about the shields and how they act in Halo because it explains them in the -blam!- book, in the -blam!- book you -blam!-. So dont tell him to come off his high pedestal just because you haven't read the books and you dont know jack-s-h-i-t.

Thank you Sanchez, your profanity exemplarizes your intellect. I salute your ignorance.

If it is all right with you I'll wait for Hikaru who has opinions I respect and who's far more capable of carrying on a sophisticated debate.

Oh Sanchez that was funny. Thanks. As for arguing the point. Okay then let me put it like this, ( it won't be good because I am tired and unable to put up a very good fight).

I am jsut trying to make sense of all this by using my knowledge from the books. As for the knife being effective against today's horrible ballistic vests, yes it is. Whcih is really funny when you think about it. The difference between shields and vest is that the shields were said to be slippery. Now I don't know about you, but I have never seen a bullet proff vest being slippery like the shields. You know waht I can't finish this off. (I knew I shouldn't have partied so much last night, damn it.)

It is just a video game, Bungie never said anything about a knife in Halo 2, and according to the all knowledgable books they would come off as ineffecitve against Elites while their shields are up. Plus ever seen the Chief's fist go through an Elite's shield at full strength(other than with that one hit back kill)? No, I didn't think so. Good night people, I might be on for another half hour and then I'm out.

When you think about it a kinfe is not that far fetched. Why wouldn't a knife work when hitting an elite in the back would? Physics 101-- If i put a lot of energy behind something kinda of wide like the butt end of a shoutgun the energy spreads out. Now imagine all the energy from the bottom of the shoutgun focused at point of a knife. It would be very powerful. A knife though, even since it could work, isn't really what I'd expect from halo, new combos for hittin them in the back, good a knife would come out of nowhere and blindside me like the time and with the girl and the vodka well, that might have been a dream but let's not go there.

Also, about the knives, in TfOr, MC throws a knife through wood, and it went all the way to the handle. So about knives being able to break easily, I beg to differ.

Well, Draerden is my new favourite poster.

Mostly because I hate Hikaru with a passion because he thinks he knows everything about everything, and feels so insecure that he needs to tell a forum full of people that he parties, as to not make him look like a total nerd. Which he is.

Quiet frankly I could give a damn about this forum's opinion of me. Especially you, YouAreAnIdiot. I never said I know everything, I just know more than the average Halo player. As for feeling insecure. HA! I was celebrating my buddy coming back from Iraq and listening to all the war stories he had to tell me. He even showed me a combat video that he snuck past the inspectors at the gates. Also I am a total nerd, and I love it. So go suck on your mother's food nipple, learn to insult (if your mind is even capable of actually insulting someone that doesn't give much a damn about you), and grow up.

And Draerden is also my favorite as well, because he can keep a good conversation on Halo going without it becoming an insult fest. Unlike a lot of you.

Look.

I think the point is that if the knife can be made to work, and bungie thinks it fits in with the Halo 2 game universe, not just the books...then they may put it in.

If its not gonna work with Halo 2's control set-up or gameplay mechanics then it doesnt really mean -blam!- what it says in the books, because seriously, only Geeks are gonna give a f**k about reproducing the books in that kinda detail.

Its all about the game, so i just hope whatever they decide to add, whether it be knifes, sprinting, new weapons etc etc..that it's inutitive and fun.

Isnt that what its all aboot.

And for the record, swearing or name calling etc doesn't make a person a good or bad poster, as long as their point makes sense and is a usefull comment/contribution.

I digress...

Dang...i just wanna play the game...hurry up the 9th of Nov...then we can all be happy.

Thank you "YouareanIdiot" but Hikaru and I have buttled in the past and to be honest, I greatly enjoy it. He may come off sounding like he knows everything but then so do I.
The sign of wisdom and intellect is to be able to cede another's point and allow it to alter your own preceptions.

In many ways losing a debate is far more fruitful then winning one.

I will close with the following conjecture, that the author of the novel took into account his target audience which he thought to consider "light" readers, expecting hardcore science fiction fans to pass him by. He also did not fully think through his ideas, concentrating his thoughts solely upon what he considered exciting, mainly bullets and energy blasts, leaving melee as an afterthought.

Oh, and Freeload... swearing and name calling may not make you a bad poster but does show a significant lack of style and engenders an image of intellectual feebleness.

I once had a professor that could insult you in five different languages and with such variety that he could have an entire class rolling on the floor with laughter. He challenged his students to duel him thusly and won every time. His only rule was that you never resorted to profanity. If you did the match would stop instantly and he would pronounce that you had lost.

Very good Draerden. Very good. I will not accept any form of defeat (I refuse to give up, bit too stubborn for my own good), but rather a temporary stalemate at this moment. If Bungie wants knives and they make them work, then fine. Otherwise I don't see any reason for them to be in. We will have to wait and see.

i read in a halo2 article in a magazine that when you sprint you run faster than normal, but you can't use your wepons in a sprint. in halo2 many changes have been made to vehicles, such as, faster vehicles. the ghost might have a feature in which it can go faster than normal for a short amount of time. also since the vehicles are better the maps must be bigger for the vehicles to move around in. as a result MC has this sprint capability just in case you don't have a vehicle to speed around in. as for the knife it sounds like it could be useful when you have no ammo, but you got the melee attack.

going off subject i think they should put in some kind of EMP bomb or grenade to take off sheilds and deplete the batteries of energy guns like the plasma pistol.

Personally, I would like to be able to pick up (some) objects and use them to bash opponents, in the way you can melee opponents with the Flag on CTF. Most likely impossible, but there it is.

I had another thought...if someone could create the shield for the MC, what's to say that someone couldn't develop a material that is not affected by those shields. (and to flog the horse properly, make a knife out of that same material.)

Ok it pains me deeply to see Hikaru back at his old antics again.... Hikaru man, i already know all about your ever-so-nerdy habits (reading the 3 books over a hundred times all together) or how about (counting every single human and covie in the game on all difficulties and then categorizing them into groups and graphs) I swear he did all these things as he proudly told me he did and showed the results. PEOPLE LIKE HIKARU GIVE HALO A BAD NAME ALONG WITH THE VIDEO GAMING COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. The reason we have ratings on games is because of people like Hikaru that can't distinguish the difference between reality and a game. The point is he is addicted and if he isn't then i i guess i don't know what ADDICTED is then.

We've all done some pretty stupid and nerdy things, who here hasn't played all night or done a warthog jump? But when you think it's an adrenaline rush to count plants and trees in every level, then i just have to question your sanity.

I can see how a knife could go through a shield. i mean everything makes perfect sense. and yes a knife may be flimsy but check out the ships made out of Grade A Titanium metal, whos to say the MC didnt break off a piece of a table in the mess hall on the PoA and sharpen it up? Of course itll go through the sheild. and if not then whack him a few times upside the head then stab his juggular. p.s. how do guts come out of the juggular?
