Since this is a game I would probably call it cheap not cheating. But, considering that he who kills first wins, it's almost stupid not to try and use it. I HATE it when someone is using it but I also HATE that frickin sword. Why, because I can't use them as well as the other players and they kick my ass with it. So, until I figure out what the hell I'm doing, I (like any new boot on a battle field) my life expectancy is rather short.

While the Halo community would seem like the wrong place to be a noob I've found it rather inviting. Thanks to quite a few experienced players, I'm being taught such button combos as the BXR which go a long way towards lenghtening my life expectancy, and that's a good thing.

If they are in a competetive setting where rules are written and points scored for money then maybe they could limit it's use. Until then, cheap but not cheating, just taking advantage of an existing capability to increase your odds of success.

No matter what, it's always fun. If you win. So try harder random.

Never eat yellow snow, unless of course, you spilled your Mt. Dew!

I think what frustrates most people is how over powered the combo is. There is nothing worse than feeling powerless against something that is easy to use, no thinking required.

That's right, that's what causes the frustration of having it used on you.

In my opinion it is the same as a sniper kill. Instantaneous. Why do peiple -blam!- then?

If you have any sort of basic awareness in-game and shoot at the sniper before he fires you'll knock 'em out of scope and stop him from getting a headshot on you. When you get killed by a sniper I tend to think about what I did wrong and whether or not I should have laid some fire on that notorious sniper camping spot so he couldn't scope in. When dealing with the combo you need to be within a few feet of cover to survive and when you think about what you did wrong it's just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

i've been using this lately and it must take some sort of skill coz people use it way better than i do tho this is quicker to kill with but i would do better with a br and shotgun

Halo is the best game since Grifball!

The reason that the PP/BR combo is worse than other one-hit kill weapons (shotgun, sword, rockets) is that you actually have to get in close to use those other weapons aside from rockets which are good out to medium range. It actually takes skill to get close enough to an opponent, especially when they have seen you, whareas for PP/BR you just press a sequence of buttons. No skill involved (sounds alot like BXR or BXB).

Some people should ask themselves. "Is the guy with the combo a noob, or am I the noob for continuously trying to kill him head on and then complaining about it"

I don't even call it the "noob combo", I call it "the combo". If you're in ranked game and you have an opening to get this combo and you don't, then you made a bad decision. It's a great combination of guns that compliment each other perfectly. If you think otherwise its because you either don't really want to win or you hate getting killed by it.
Frankie once said a long time ago in reference to this topic : "Is it a noob combo? No. A real noob combo would be duel wielding a hand-kerchief and a needler"

it is similar to the grand slam in baseball. you had a chance did not score enough, then they hit the grand slam that knocked your socks off that quick and easy......complaining about the noob combo is almost like complaining about a power hitter in baseball.....or tedd ginn jr when he played for the bucks....its part of reality and if you dont like it tough -blam!-!!

Tell me a noob would own an entire team with the noob combo. Hell the rocket launcher, the sword, the plasma punch and the shotgun are all powerful weapons which doesn't give anyone a chance if used correctly. Same thing for the Br combo, I've killed more than one person who was trying to use the combo and I'm no pro. Assassinations are coward too, do they give the other a chance? no. Tell me you survive a rocket in the face or a sword cut. You just hate the combo because your not good enough to change your tactics when somebody uses it. It happens to be killed sometimes, even by a noob. I'm not a bad player but once a played a duel against a pro. I tell you, i never had a chance to use the br combo, I tried at mid range when he was in a perfect line but he always managed to counter it. rockets didn't work either and I couldn't get too close to him without being pwnd so no shotgun or sword. So I stick with the BR and grenades and managed to do some kills.

Or if you want, we can ask bungie to have a game where 2 players stand at 10 meters of each other, can't move and have to kill the other with the same weaponry.

By the way, in matchmaking there is a gametype called training combo or something like that. Your only weapons? the PP and the BR. Guess what there was people who didn't even used it. And guess what, I never saw a tie. Some match were rough others we totally owned the other team. If you make everyone use the PP/BR combo you can clearly see it takes skills. EVERYTHING takes skill.

Do what it takes to win, cause it's do or die and living aint a sin.

In the Halo universe it's kill or be killed. You have to be smart and adapt. You have to be quick and decisive on the plans you carry out. This is the same if your a sniper or the flag catcher. It's not just about who has the most powerful combo. any weapon can be useless if you don't know how to use it.

Here's my motto: Do whatever it takes to win. If you can help your team but if it comes down to just win.

i know i personally get really frustrated about the "Noob Combo" but if you were not supposed to use it, it wouldn't be in the game, and besides what are you going to do if someone is better than you, i dont know what your going to do but im gonna take any advantage that i can so i can win. So yeah it is frustrating but if your getting sick of people using it on you either get better a. or b. use it on them.

First off, newb, mis-spelled noob, is short for newbie, which is slang for "new boy". Calling some guy with 300+ games under his belt a newb is imbecilic at best.

Secondly, the definition of a fair fight is a fight that I win, whether IRL or in Cyberia. If I can get behind you and kill you in Fallujah with a rifle IRL, I am OK with that. If I can get behind you and do the same in the game, I am OK with that, too.

How you waste people is of no consequence. That you do it as quickly as possible is.

Anyone who argues against a particularly effective technique probably hasn't really considered the big picture.

"Don't you trust me?'
"No, I can't say that I do."
"Good, you'll live longer."

if u use the noob combo a couple times thats ok but if u use it the entire game then it does get really annoying but that is also the same for rockets and the sword

  • 07.16.2007 12:11 PM PDT

I use the combo anytime i dont have a power weapon. If you dont use it you are just stupid. If you are playing slayer it is all about the frags right? Well it makes for an easy kill and sometimes easy wins.

The only problems I have are it tracks way too much and it takes down both overshield and regular shield. In essence, the PP is a bad weapon, using it with any other gun is not worth discussing.

Agreed. Referencing my earlier statement, which everyone seemed to ignore, (key section is in italics):

And to those who state that you shouldn't charge at someone who is using it:

Sure, that's a very simple thing to do if the guy is running out in the open holding a highly visible green ball of energy. However, a good chunk of the people I have encountered who use it don't run around the map, but instead camp.

I'd imagine that it would be pretty goddamned difficult to avoid a plasma bolt that a guy shoots at you from point blank range as you round a corner.

I mean, I'd have no gripes if the Plasma Pistol's homing ability worked like the Rocket Launcher's. Hold reticule steady over target, release when locked. At least that would give the person on the receiving a second or two to react. And it would also make the homing OPTIONAL. Too impatient to wait two seconds for a lock? Simply charge and release. That would also give the person on the receiving end a chance to sidestep the attack and even things up.

I beleive it's a little bit of both...it's a quick kill which is good playing... but it's also very easy... equalling out to be good newbing. :D

its not my weapon of choice but i've used it but only after the other team does first. i think its called the noob combo because the person using it always yells out noob after getting a kill lol

Well, it's smart thinking, for all the new people it's basically how to survive. But i've BxR and BxB many noob combos, sure my sheild is down but If I get close to you by the time you switch to Br you're dead, to avoid it, just hide around in halls and structures, if you don't dodge their PP at least you have a chance of dodging their BR.
