OK so I was playing through Halo 2 campain and began to wonder why instillation 05 is called the Delta Halo since Delta is the 4th letter in the Greek alphabet. So I started looking at the names of the instillations and their caretakers. Since in Halo 2 we learn that there are 7 rings here is are the probable ring names:
Instilation Ring Caretaker # Caretaker name
01 alpha 7^1 = 7 ???
02 beta 7^2 = 49 ???
03 gamma 7^3 = 343 Guilty Spark
04 delta 7^4 = 2401 Penitent Tangent
05 epsilon 7^5 = 16,807 ???
06 zeta 7^6 = 117,649 ???
07 eta 7^7 = 823,543 ???
All good so far right? Well then why is instillation 05 called delta instead of epsilon and why is 2401 on 05. So I shuffled the list to what we know so far.
Instilation Ring Caretaker # Caretaker name
01 ??? 7^0 = 1 ???
02 alpha 7^1 = 7 ???
03 beta 7^2 = 49 ???
04 gamma 7^3 = 343 Guilty Spark
05 delta 7^4 = 2401 Penitent Tangentepsilon
06 epsilon 7^5 = 16,807 ???
07 zeta 7^6 = 117,649 ???
08 eta 7^7 = 823,543 ???
Now the instillations are as we have seen them but what is up with the naming and numbering. Is the Ark instilation 01? Why would bungie use a naming scheme based on the powers of 7 but then lable the rings with the incorrect greek letters and a number that doesn't match either. Was it just a mistake? A conspiracy with deeper meaning? WTF?
Does anyone remember if instillation 04 was called the alpha halo at one point or have I gone crazy... (don't answer that part)
Totally unrelated side note I was correlating the dates of the first halo encounter from the books (September 19th-22nd) with that of 343 GS in the conversations from the universe booklet (revolution 56-11.333 - 56-11.337) and figured out that a local Halo day is the equivalent of 19 Earth hours.
