Bah! You guys are so anti-capatalist!
Best not to start something like that.
I agree about VALVe and their use of steam, however. While I'm not totally sold on digital distribution yet, I am all for rubbing out the middle man and giving total control to developers.
Imagine what would happen: Games would be released when the developers declared it done, no more rush jobs to meet a publisher's strict deadline. No more cut corners or having to bow to a corporation's whims.
I think the sooner we make DD standard the sooner we'll be seeing better and more innovative games.
...The Phantom is still laughable, however.
So far, I've had no problems with this method; I've downloaded pretty much everything VALVe offers on Steam without incident, and it was a hell of a lot easier than driving 30 miles to the nearest game store. Steam also makes it harder for people to get warez, as everything must be validated by their servers. The only problem is most people in America don't have broadband, which is required if you want to download a game. This will not be a problem in the near future, and in countries like Sweden it's already quite possible to distribute your games online only.
Anyways, I guess I am a little biased against Microsoft. You know, ever since that Windows thing "Buy this $100 upgrade to remove the bugs we intentionally placed and the security holes we didn't!"
