For everyone who is about to be upset with this thread being locked,
When it comes to the subject of racism, I can only imagine two potential reasons to create a thread on Bungie.Net about it. They are both questions that would (and should) be asked by someone who does not know the answer. The two questions are;
* Is racism allowed or tolerated on Bungie.Net?
* Is racism allowed or tolerated on Xbox Live!?
The answer to the first one is simple and most applicable to these forums. The answer is straight-forward and without any confusion. "No, it is NOT permitted NOR is it tolerated." Period, full-stop, end of statement.
If any Bungie.Net member sees any example of another member using racial terms, slurs, insults, or other violations of the Code of Conduct, Terms of Use or the Forum Rules, we ask that the member noticing the problem notify a Bungie employee, or a Forum Moderator ASAP via PM. Do not respond to the offensive post, but PM us with a URL to the thread so we may enforce the membership agreement as is our duty.
Now, that's Bungie.Net.
XBL is a similar, but somewhat trickier situation. Here on the Bungie.Net forums, what a person says is typed on the screen and is there for all to see until it is removed, edited or the member is taken care of. XBL has text gamertags, but most interaction is verbal. However, XBL has Terms of Use, Code of Conduct and other rules that are very similar to Bungie.Net. They are part of the same parent company. They have different feedback and reporting tools (PM's here, member feedback there) but they too can only enforce their agreement when they are made aware of a problem.
Now, we have two questions and two very clear answers. It's very clear to me that if someone is uncertain of the policies for both companies, they would need to ask the question(s) that I mentioned.
Other than that, I see no point and no benefit from threads discussing the subject matter for any other reason. It's clear that the behavior is not tolerated here, the words are not allowed, and yet these threads are stocked full of people using terms, slurs and other non-permitted statements. In a text-based environment like Bungie.Net, even using an offensive term as an example puts us on the slippery slope of "well HE used it!" or even less defendable, "I can use the term because that term refers to my race/gender/culture so I am exempt..."
Nope, I just don't see it. Also, there is the fact that these discussions can't help but turn political and are ALWAYS full of people flirting with blam filter (as examples or even worse) expressing their own racist views, they have no benefit to the community that I can imagine.
Once more, if you experience racism on Bungie.Net, tell us so we can eliminate the problem. If you experience it on XBL, tell them so they can do the same. There are no positives or other points to discuss. It is not tolerated. I don't enjoy disciplining someone for violating forum rules, even if their intentions are good, but I will because I have agreed to do just that.
Want an example? Just look at any of these threads that have been around for a couple of dozen posts. Sooner or later, in one spelling or another, the slurs start showing up. Those terms are absolutely unacceptable on these forums. I am unwilling to allow ANYONE to use them. That is what I mean when I say that racism is not allowed nor is it tolerated. If it offends you to see it, why in the name of all that is good, would you even think of retyping it where it can offend even more of your fellow members?
So, this thread is locked. So will any others that I see. Because the question is not "is racism bad?" Because we should all know (by now) that it is.
What is a fact is that this is not the place to discuss the evils and social problems associated with it. The only valid form of the question are the two that I mentioned and that answer is easy to find.(Just ignore the part about the thread being locked. The quote is from a different thread that was locked.) There was another one by Recon that I'll try to find. I think that the other one is more suited for this.
