Bungie, I am sure you know about the widespread button glitches going on in matchmaking, but so few people understand that it's cheating! I am proposing a cheating awareness news post, in one of your weekly little news announcement things. This way, many more people will know about this form of cheating, and I guarentee you, it will drastically lower the abuse of this glitch in the reload/fire sequence.

Also, if a moderator would please post on here stating whether or not button glitches are cheating, I'd be very thankful. This is just so that all the skeptics will understand when they read this.

In your face!

There is no way that bungie can tell if people are using button glitches. Hence, there is no point.

  • 07.09.2007 7:02 PM PDT

A good point, HurtfulTurkey, but it's important that people understant *why* it's considered cheating, as well.

Glitching is cheating, because it breaks the XBL Terms of Use. Particularly Section 10, which deals with not exploting the software. Now, a lot of people seem to think that it is not considered cheating by Bungie, because Bungie does not ban people for doing it. The reason is that the Banhammer cannot detect glitching in the game itself - only manipulations of the game.

The thing is, people are just flippping right through the TOU and selecting "I Agree", and they don't see that little stipulation.

More proof BXR or any button comnbo is cheating. Scroll down and read Achronos's post. That should clear things up a bit.

i agree that it is cheeting but tough it out for a few more months, i think you can live with button glitching for a little while longer. Also bungie calls it cheating, then y don't they do anything about it. They say super jumping isn't cheating, but it is exploting a glitch. I'm trying not to flame, this is just my opinion. There is a fine line between cheating and not, and i am stuck in the grey.

To fix superjumping, Bunge would have to rewrite the game, and sell new discs, which you don't want. To fix button glitches, they said it may cause more problems than it would solve by opening up new combos.

Yes, superjumping is cheating, it is just too widespread and underreported for them to be able to ban people. Although, if reported enough, button glitchers will be banned.

Jrock, it's cool, this is about cheating awareness, which he just learned, not forcefully informing people.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is considered cheating? What do I do if I've been a victim of cheating? My brother ruined my account!? Read on for answers to your most pressing questions...
Thank you to Major Nelson of the Xbox Live team for his help in this matter.

Q
What is considered cheating or against the rules in Halo 2?

A
In a nutshell, Bungie considers cheating to be the act of manipulating or interfering with aspects of the game or networking to give yourself or your team an unfair advantage. The exact methods and cases will vary as people invent new ways to do bad things. Our team is constantly monitoring the latest exploits and issues and will be reacting as necessary. Common examples of things that will get someone banned from Live play include "standby cheats" (i.e. interfering with the network connection to disrupt gameplay), using hacked maps or game files or manipulating matchmaking to "boost" your way up the leaderboards.

There are also other issues beyond actual cheating that could result in punishment by either the Live Team or Bungie. Profanity, threats, racism and inappropriate player/clan names are all examples of Conduct violations that will result in some sort of punishment from the Xbox Live Team.

Q
What is NOT considered a bannable offense by Bungie?

A
Quitting a game is not a bannable offense. Having a team-killer on your team sucks, but that's not a bannable offense either. Many people are also aware of the "super jumping" phenomenon that allows players on some maps to jump to extreme heights. We are monitoring this situation for long term impacts to game balance but we are not banning people who do this simply because it's too widespread and is something that's basically built into the map. Anyone can do this if they want to though it is difficult to pull off in many cases. We will continue to monitor the impacts this bug has on our game

Achronos says otherwise. And so do the XBL Terms of Service.

This is different, I'm asking Bungie to make an announcement about this, because so many people are confused or unaware about cheating.

I'm certifiable.

People who exploit glitches will continue to do so and make incredibly elaborate justifications for why it's alright... despite posts from Bungie employees.

All I can say is, keep reporting them via Feedback. Live will cull them out over time if you do.
