In Europe, we've got lovely UN and European human rights bills. Sadly, in America you do not. That is why today The Guardian reports that conscription may be re-introduced in the US as early as next June. The necessary legislation is here. I do hope that I won't be seeing some of you going off to fight.

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

I'm shaking in my boots.

<-- Have gun will travel.. Will shoot terrorists/murderers mother -blam!- dead without remorse, if need be.

It would suck, but hey, I'll Never Forget <- That's a link.

I don't care, if they passed a bill to allow the draft again, I wouldn't be drafted, I would enlist. After all those who fought to bring freedom to me, it would be piss poor not to do the same. Freedom isn't always free.

Yeah, America is pretty bad. Bush made us look like a bunch of idiots. When I went to london, everyone there treated my family like sh"". I want to move to canada. Have you ever seen bowling for columbine?

  • 05.31.2004 7:46 AM PDT

But surely you agree that people shouldn't be forced to fight?

Maybe not in a sense, but if its to protect my family, friends and others then its worth it.

If I remember correctly, it was the USofA that decided to help form the United Nations after WWII. And secondly, the draft is just another scare. They've been doing this on and off for the last 15 years.

  • 05.31.2004 7:58 AM PDT

My point was that the US hadn't signed up to the UN's human rights bill (either the UN or European one bans conscription). But this is actual legislation that would allow them to introduce the draft. The really scary thing, however, is that this apparently hasn't been reported whatsoever in America, so you're average American doesn't know about it.

It'll start getting around college campuses quick enough, especially after I start showing people this:

Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

This is messed up beyond all belief. Because frankly, I don't want these people ruining my life especially since the year it's planned to start, is the year I become I senior. The second they try to get this passed, the public will have a fit, flags will start burning. UC Berkeley and along with it's sister UC Santa Cruz (my school) will start going back to the 60s-like protesting until the day they die. Congress won't win on this one. Trust me.

I forgot to mention that in America, there's a lot more dissonence towards fighting than people realize.

Most of us know about it. We just don't care. I'm sure most of us have more important things to worry about. Jobs, Economy, Family, Bills, Life...

Last Wednesday, the American public was officially instructed to panic. Attorney general John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Mueller - brows furrowed, faces grim - took over primetime TV to deliver a spine-chilling message to their fellow citizens: "Al-qaida attack imminent."
When, where, and what form the outrage will take, is unknown. But something very, very awful is going to happen very, very soon.

What a joke..

Europe is weak.

The last real war most Europeans fought was World War II. By the way nearly every country in Europe was defeated by -blam!- Germany, then America, USSR, and Great Britain had to bail you guys out. Then the good ole US of A protected your puny little European Nations from the USSR. Do you Europeans remember the Marshall plan, we saved Europes economies or rebuilt them from scratch. I am sure glad I dont live in Europe, socialist paradise is not my cup of tea.
O and the UN bill of rights is a joke freedom of thought, now thats nothing compared to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religon, and freedom of the press.
In fact freedom from the draft is about the only thing beyound freedom of thought in the UN bill of rights.
I dont know about you Europeans but it would be a honor to serve my coountry.

Since when was Great Britain (my country) not in Europe?
And don't start with the whole "the US saved your arses in WWII", because it's off-topic and isn't the whole truth.

Except conscription would be something to care about if it were introduced. I think being forced to join the army is quite a large concern.

I knew it would be, but I didn't want to be. This thread was purely for information on something that I would imagine a lot of young Americans would be concerned about were it to be introduced. I'm sure stosh and Shishka would understand ;-)

I'm disappointed that you started this thread. Don't act like you had no idea where it'd go.
