Was it down to aggressive marketing and the game being shoved down our throats, or was the original halo somewhat of a surprise hit? Did anyone expect it to be anywhere near as good as it was?

I'd have to say the last 2 statements are more true. Everyone thought the X-Box was a bust, but then Halo: CE came along. And it got its own Limited Edition X-Box in return for saving the X-Box.

Surprise hit, defiantly. Halo came from out of nowhere. This is an opinion of somebody who never heard of Bungie, and had a PS2.

There wasn't much hype for it at all really. I mean, it didn't really come out of nowhere, it was on the cover of PC magazine once. Not nearly as much as there is for the series now.

In my opinion it wasn't really hyped.
I only found out about it because I got it as a free disk with my xbox.
Halo CE had an amazing story lin eof survival, if only they showed it a bit more (y)

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I never heard about until I saw it at a target >_>

Never heard about it until I played it at a friend's, and I didn't understand it until I got it Christmas of 2005.

Bill Gates told Master Chief "Thanks for saving the Xbox."

NO. Was NOT a surprise hit. It had HUGE anticipation for a while beforehand, it was supposed to be a brand new style of FPS that explored massive outdoorsy areas - very much unlike almost all FPS's before it (not counting the early online FPS's like Tribes (lol), they were almost all enclosed in tight areas).

I remember hearing early reports for Halo being released on the PC. I remember special features in major magainzes about it. When the XBOX came out and it was revealed that Halo was gonna be console only, people were pissed at first (so was I). I suppose there was a little bit of surprise in that Halo CE was such an amazing game, but it was certainly well-touted before its release, and had a pretty massive (massive for its time, at least) word on the street.
