What I'm about to say is probably going to sound really strange. I apologize for any scrambled brains.
If you think about it in another light a company is not exactly an animate being. You cannot meet Bungie on the street, go see a movie with Bungie, sip tea with Bungie, ask Bungie what its favorite color is. Technically speaking, Bungie doesn't "do" anything. It is the people employed at Bungie who do stuff on behalf of the company.
So I would think it more appropriate to say, "The programmers at Bungie are working on Halo 3." When in doubt, it is best to avoid such confusion altogether by referring to something else.
Haha, very true, you cannot go see a movie with Bungie. Too bad -- if Bungie were a woman, I'd date her!
I see your point, but despite the ethereal quality of this thing that we call a "company," Bungie is one corporate entity. That's the way corporations work -- legally, a corporation is quite literally a "person" (in the law, a "person" and an "individual" are two different things). Bungie can enter into contracts, sell and buy things, sue and be sued, hire and terminate employees, and if it did something really bad, could even be held guilty of committing a crime. None of these actions are imputed to the individual employees, owners, or board members who drive the deal -- instead, we just say things like "Bungie hired a new employee" or "Bungie bought a new building" or "Bungie just sued Stosh for emotional trauma and pain and sufferering." We say that because it is Bungie, the corporate entity, who is responsible for the action.
For this reason, the singular form "Bungie is" remains correct.
