Go with the PSP, dude. The graphics are millions of times better, the games will be bigger, and the screen is much better. The only downside to the PSP is battery life :(. DS's ONE good feature is the rechargable battery, just like in the SP. Actually, it has two: backwards compatibility with GBA and GB games. The only problem to THAT is the fact that your GBA games will be cut out; the picture is too big for the DS screen.
I played Metriod on a DS demo console...it friggin' sucks. The control will, like Shishka said, give you arthritis pain. The whole 2 screen setup is too much for the eyes to handle, and the stylus, while a novel concept on paper, sucks in real life. Who knows, maybe they'll turn things around, but I'd rather have my PSP. It's more expensive, but it's also lots better.
