I am currently running vista home basic x64 with a core 2 duo and 4 gigs or ram. I have a 630w power supply and a 250 g 7200rpm hard drive. When I first installed vista, it ran like a rock...that lays in the sand doing nothing but being there to stubb people's toes. It locked up every other second and would stay locked up for a good minute...then it would come to its senses only to lock up again a second later. After 3 days of this, everything was fine. I could run battlefield 2 and halo 2 maxed (obviously) and vista ran as smooth as a wee baby's bottom. But (duh duh duh) it's happened again. i just turned on the computer it was upon me. I need help BAD. any suggestions are more than welcome. thanks in advance.

btw im writing this on my laptop, which doesn't have vista

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

My recommendation is don't use Vista.

It could be a bunch of things

1. Did you use the upgrade option when you installed Vista? If so, then you should have done a clean one.
2. Do you have a virus scanner? If so, then use it and make sure it doesn't scan your computer automatically.
3. Turn off the indexing service, Vista is probably scanning your computer and indexing every file. Use Google, because I'm to lazy to tell you how.

The 64bit version of vista is just fine as all modern hardware that matters has drivers for it and that would be the only issue holding it back.

Vista itself wouldnt just lock up for the heck of it so there is an issue either with the installation itself or a hardware part.

First of all did you recently installing and program aside from h2v or bf2?

Any recent hardware change?

no, no hard/software changes. I run lavasoft's ad-aware se to get rid of any cookies or potential malware, but i never surf the web on my desktop anyways, and scan results rarely if not ever hold dangerous objects, only cookies. in a sense I wish another person was going thru this so that i knew it wasn't a bad CD (although that would also be a good excuse for m-soft to replace it) or installation or something. btw thanks all for your input so far...

No, trust me Static, the 64 bit version of Vista is very unstable.

Why would you turn off Superfetch? With it turned off your RAM is being wasted.

Tbh, I know some people very good with computers that couldn't get it to run very stable, I'm not saying it can't be done, just that I don't know.

No it's not. Any piece of hardware worth mention has drivers for the 64 bit version of vista.

I didn't say it didn't have drivers, it just doesn't function as well as the 32 bit Vista.

Worked fine for me.

But he has 4 gigs of ram. If he went to 32 bit he would loss a gig.

I have the latest released drivers for everything and Halo 2 is patched to the latest available patch.

I'm really very mad at this.

Well, you either hit it on the head, or you don't, I guess, I didn't.

Mate, don't worry, my friend is running Vista with a Quad Core Processor, 2gb of ram and an 8800GTX and it locks up too.

Vista is just unstable, and will continue to be until the first service pack. Just continue to be pissed off until updates come out.

Well I've been using Vista since Beta RC2 and have never had it lock up. (See signature for crappy specs)

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

I guess some PC's have problems running it, while others don't.

My PC at the moment jsut has Framerate problems with H2V becuase of my crappy graphics card, but it can't handle one large movie file.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

I think only the high end machines have problems.

You can send that PC to me if you have any further issues.

The fact that he knew before you told him is proof... In my opinion. I heard it was the more unstable than the 32bit version.

I THINK the reason is that Microsoft had some basic problems when they made XP 64. They didn't support it very well, because nobody bought it. When they made Vista 64 they carried over a lot of the ideas/code from XP and thus, the same problems. To add to that, Vista itself is new so it's two different sets of issues. Having used neither, I can't honestly say how to fix it except to wait for a service pack : (
